I'd do a #4/#5 LD with upside in that same age range too. I'm a broken record, but we need a Marcus Pettersson from the year we traded for him. Pickering is gonna work. Need one more.

Mentioning this because I think the Oilers are probably the most likely location for Pettersson with the Canucks falling off. I think the main pieces they'd offer are St. Louis's 2nd (which the Penguins originally got for Hayes and was transferred to the Oilers due to the Broberg offersheet) and their #3 (Akey) and #4 (Järventie) prospects.

I think Akey is the main guy I like, but he's definitely more of a long-term guy. From that report:



I figure he's probably a comparable prospect to Pieniniemi, so that would be a solid main prospect to get back for Pettersson. That would likely end up being around pick #45 and Akey for Pettersson, since St. Louis is around the same spot in the standings as the Penguins.

I focused on Akey because he was a RHD PMD. having him and Brunicke in the system would be solid. Pickering and Pie for the left side.

They need to get these aging guys off of the roster that aren’t core pieces. If you can’t even get future considerations for the likes of Hayes, Nieto, Acciari, etc. they need to waive them.

The season is already lost. There is absolutely no point to continue forward with these guys that won’t be here moving forward.

The rest of the season should be for pushing youth into the lineup and assessing if any of them are ready for the NHL.

But knowing this FO, we will be throat f***ed with the likes of Glass, Nieto, Acciari, Graves, Hayes, etc for the rest of the year.

The issue with this line of thought is that you need to be able to field an AHL team as well and the AHL has veteran requirements for their lineups. You can't just send all of Glass, Nieto, Acciari, Hayes and Graves to the AHL while calling up young guys because WBS literally would not be able to field a compliant roster. WBS can only play I think 6 players with more than 3 seasons of professional games, you can't just send all of the shitty NHL guys you don't like to the AHL and call up young guys.

I think a realistic expectation for the post-deadline lineup is:

Rakell-Crosby-Rust
Bunting-Malkin-Tomasino
McGroarty-Ponomarev-Bemstrom
Poulin-Lizotte-Acciari
Hayes

POJ-Letang
Pickering-Karlsson
Graves-St. Ivany
Shea

Blomqvist-Nedjelkovic

Anything more aggressive than this likely just hurts WBS to a level that's not worth it.
 
I wonder if DOC having such a shit season is going to lead to the Pens re-signing him instead. Can't possibly have much value now.

He's still pacing for close to 30 points, he'd be a nice addition for a contender's bottom 6.

I mean O'Connor has 6 goals and 16 points in 48 games. Not really sure that he'd be realistically doing much better otherwise.

Him putting up a 10 goal, 30 point pace with his defense and forechecking shouldn't dramatically hurt his value.

5 points out of the final playoff spot with other teams ahead of us. If Dubas really wants this team to make the playoffs then he better do something now. Time for talking is over. If its all smoke then he better start selling off some players. Doing nothing is not going to help anyone and gives us fans less reasons to attend games. Pick a Lane Kyle.

I don't know man, I can't agree with your logic here. Bunting has 10 less goals than Jake at about half the cost. They also added one very interesting prospect in Kovi, one solid/ok prospect in Pom and one wild card with Luci. They also picked up 2 picks, one that they turned into a possible stud D. All for a difference of 10 goals.

Yeah you'd have to be silly to complain about the Guentzel return right now for the Penguins. That doesn't mean it will end up great for them, but it is looking good for them right now.

Between:

1. Rakell exploding in Guentzel's old spot and putting up a ~70 point pace on L1 with Crosby at LW
2. Bunting putting up a ~60 point pace mostly on L2 with Malkin
3. Koivunen being one of the top scorers among AHL rookies
4. Brunicke looking like a stud and nearly making the Penguins out of camp
5. They also got Ponomarev and Lucius in the deal

What is there to complain about with the Guentzel deal? I honestly don't see anything they're missing from it. They've replaced like 85% Guentzel's production with Rakell, Bunting is producing well in Rakell's old spot on L2 and the prospects are progressing well.
