Not to be a conspiracy guy but look at who they traded yesterday. They took a sledgehammer to what looked to be their leadership group.

Gotta wonder a bit if management had enough of whatever has been going on and decided the best way to turn things around was moving out some particular voices in the room
For sure. Wonder what Chara's two cents were, not necessarily about the group moving out but what he thought they could do as an organization for the next generation.

The Bruins will look a lot different on Saturday when they clash with the Lightning.

Six Boston skaters were sent to new homes over a two-day stretch ahead of Friday’s trade deadline. The biggest move, by far, was the departure of Brad Marchand, dealt to the Florida Panthers.

Other players found new homes as well, including Brandon Carlo, Trent Frederic, and Charlie Coyle. Boston’s returns were heavily based in draft capital and prospects, but general manager Don Sweeney did add eight-year NHL veteran Casey Mittelstadt to the mix.
Now that the trade deadline has passed, here’s what Boston’s roster looks like:

Forwards

Boston retained forwards Morgan Geekie, David Pastrnak, Matt Poitras, Pavel Zacha, Elias Lindholm, Johnny Beecher, Cole Koepke, and Mark Kastellic. They also have two-way players like Fabian Lysell, Patrick Brown, Riley Tufte, Oliver Wahlstrom, and Georgii Merkulov at their disposal if needed.

The Bruins also added five forwards through trades, though some may not reach the big leagues right away. Mittelstadt will help replace the gap left by Coyle at center, and familiar face Jakub Lauko will be a depth option as well.

Fraser Minten, acquired in the Carlo trade, has quite a bit of upside and could figure into Boston’s lineup this season, though he doesn’t have many NHL games under his belt. Marat Khusnutdinow is in a similar situation, but is a less likely option for this season than Minten.

The Bruins also acquired Will Zellers, who is still in the USHL and is leading the league in scoring.

The exact lines Boston lands on for Saturday and down the stretch is yet to be seen, but the Bruins could look something like this at forward:

Geekie-Poitras-Pastrnak

Zacha-Lindholm-Beecher

Lauko-Mittelstadt-Kastellic

Lysell-Brown-Koepke

The bottom six could see quite a lot of turnover in the last 18 games. Boston will likely try out many of its younger players as it plays out the rest of the season.

Defensemen

Boston didn’t lose a ton of defenders as part of its roster purge. Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, Andrew Peeke, Mason Lohrei, and Parker Wotherspoon all remain. Ian Mitchell is also an option, and has been back and forth between Boston and Providence this season.

Carlo was the only defenseman moved before the deadline, and the Bruins did add a pair of defensemen in Max Wanner and Henri Jokiharju.

Jokiharju is a seven-year veteran formerly of the Buffalo Sabres, and Wanner is a much younger but intriguing prospect.

Given the injuries to Hampus Lindholm and McAvoy, Boston will likely be all hands on deck defensively for at least another few weeks, if not longer. Jokiharju should factor in immediately to help replace Carlo, and Wanner could possibly be needed in Boston as well.

As far as Saturday’s matchup is concerned, Zadorov, Peeke, Jokiharju, Lohrei, Mitchell, and Wotherspoon will likely be the six blue-liners suiting up.

Not to nitpick the great hockey minds at the Globe but…

Zellers is the leading goal scorer in the USHL, not leading scorer.

And God help humanity if Beecher sniffs second line status or minutes.

Todd Angilly would be a better choice.

He’s by far the leading scorer by a PPG basis, only 2 points behind with ten less games played and ten more goals

-Lohrei & Geekie hopefully combine for a max of 8.45mil or less
- Boeser/ Ehlers could be 8.25/9
- That leaves you with 10-11ish for Joki, and your 3 remaining bottom 6 (if Lysell is slotted in).
- If you go Marner instead of Ehlers or Boeser, you are looking at 12.5-13mil and ~7mil left
- Marchand could easily have a weird playoff experience, get a change of mind this summer, and say “hey, I don’t want to move my family, I want to stay here, let’s go 2.5-3.5mil”

This team is in trouble, and my fear for a long time.

I don’t know if anyone listens to Morning Bru, but I enjoyed their perspective on the trade deadline.

I also think Jaffe made a good point about the draft capital and the options it gives Boston this offseason. An example is there may be a team that bottoms out early and may look to make a change. The Bruins are in a better position now to make a competitive offer on a quality player that may not have been thought available.

Should be an exciting offseason.

Imo, we still have key pieces at each position...you can build around Sway, Pasta and McAvoy; if done properly you can re-tool like the Caps...but Sweeney has to hit in UFA
There in lies the rub. For all the people who criticize his drafting. My biggest knock against him is free agency acquisitions

I hope you are right; I was fine with a retool, but I think of this as a rebuild in which I was totally against. Sweeney gave the opinion that they were not going to rebuild, so now I question do they have a plan.

I want to see the following happen down the stretch:

-More young talent given chances

-Less Morgan Geekie with Pasta. He needs to show in this final stretch he’s a top 6 and not riding coat tails if he’s gonna get his bag. And if he is, this helps spread the wealth. He can stay on PP1, that’s fine. But I need to see it 5 on 5.

I don’t have lines yet. I want to see how the roster shakes out after this game cause I think they were just trying to ice a team after a crazy deadline and quick turnaround.

Trading away 1sts and not drafting adequately enough for the past 8 years leaves you with little to no ELCs, or secondary contracts for top talent prospects that many rely on to fill in small cracks left by superstar cap hits. Painfully obvious here. Thankful for Poitras still having a year left on his. Korpisalo, Zadorov, and Elias money are killing us right now. Everything else is mostly fine.
