Tolvanen definitely wasn't a bad draft pick and I don't think Tomasino was either. They were both drafted late in the first round, and once you get that low you are basically just rolling the dice. At that position you hope they turn into a useful player, no one who looks at drafting in that position expects that pick to be a top talent. You might hope they develop into that, but it's not the same drafted in the top 10.
Looking at who was available at the time in the draft, outside of a few outliers like Robertson (2017) and Pinto (2019) there really isnt many that have outperformed those picks. Our management just chose to do nothing with them. It's a crapshoot that late in the 1st.

It's like my neighbor, who considers herself a real farmer.

Day 1: put the tomato plant in the ground. Day 2: add water. Day 3: add Miracle Grow. Day 4: rip it out of the ground, throw it away, and buy tomatoes at the grocery.
