Olofsson cleared to no one’s surprise. CMac really acquired our 2C and 4C for no assets and thought that was an acceptable solution going into a contending year.

With 5 games to go until the deadline he still hasn’t addressed anything and that’s with two of our top 3 wingers missing a significant portion of the season.

So much for not wanting to overplay our top guns in the regular season.

Usually bigger trades like ones for a real 2C have the framework already figured out or are done by now. Unless a miracle happens, I’m starting to believe that what we have is what we got.
Ya the kind of trade the Avs need to be making is rarely a deadline deal. They're summer trades when teams are looking to make a big shake-up and usually also have more cap room to work with.

At this point it's pretty likely the Avs are gonna do something small that doesn't really move the needle. Henrique or Wennberg type of moves.

I can't remember which interview it was (perhaps Seravalli's) but CMac did say that he was trying to rebuild the farm system.

That explains why he used our 2 first round picks last year and why he went after players that cost no asset last summer (Oloffson, RyJo, Drouin, Tatar).

This is virtually impossible to do if you have a roster that is contending for the cup, it’s completely counterintuitive to what the Avs are trying to accomplish as a team.

Unless you have an organization that is great at drafting, which the Avs do not.

It makes sense because you can't ice several highly paid superstars and afford decent depth players without some of those depth players being on ELCs or league minimum contracts.

If we assume no big trade coming for a 2C and CMac just picks up someone like Bjugstad and some back up goalie. And assuming we get Nuke and Landy back, and we go into playoffs with this forward group…

Drouin-MacK-Mikko
Lehky-Colton-Nuke
Landy-Bjugstad-Wood
LOC-RyJo-Cogs/Parise/Kovalenko

It’s not so bad. Would be nice to have a better 4C though, although if RyJo can turn it up a little in the playoffs, he could be a passable 4C

It is a 1st round exit guaranteed yet again. Colton on the 2nd line is a worse version of JTC on the 2nd line.

Last year we didn’t have the wing depth without Landy and Nuke, and JTC couldn’t handle the 2nd line center duties in the playoffs, but if we get Nuke and Landy back, we’d have significantly better wings than last year, and Colton might be able to handle the 2C job

Not a single contender with holes on their roster has made a move.

I have seen so far in quite a few threads people Avs fans saying our depth sucks and that we rely on Mack and Makar. It always surprises me to see that because we have been near the top of the league throughout the season in goals scored and right now we are tied for 3rd with 10 players with 10 goals or more. If we get Nuke and hopefully an 80-90% healthy Landy we'll be more than fine as far as depth is concerned especially if we can be healthy enough to keep guys like Kivi, Olofsson and Dermy out of the lineup.

Edit: Oh and add a 2C as well.

The bare minimum for CMac is to go out and get a center better than Colton for 2C. Colton doesn't have the skill to be a 2C.

If they get a guy better than Rossco for 2C and go

Mack
2C
Colton
RyJo

It MIGHT be passable IF Nuke comes back and plays like he was prior to leaving, Landy comes back and plays like a 2nd liner, and Kovy comes in and upgrades the 4th line.

Lots of things need to fall into place, but that's unfortunately the reality because CMac has been way too lazy/passive the last year and a half.

Not all that surprising, especially considering they are on the cusp of being a WC team. That ship probably sailed a little over a week ago

MoneyPuck tells me that the Wild are at 27% chance of getting in currently. Then they have games against CAR, NSH, and STL upcoming. 3 regulations losses and he might be signing another tune.

How long can we depend on Nichushkin for? I wouldn't bet my last 10 bucks on him coming back and being reliable. Dudes a headcase.

And will Landy even come back? What will he provide when he does come back?

Those are two HUGE question marks man.

Rantanen AND Byram for Petterson? Don't we want to improve our team? What else is Vancouver throwing in?

Rantanen is old now? He's 27 and Petterson is 25.
Petey vs Rantanen is at best a wash especially since Bednar refuses to just permanently let Mack and Rantanen drive their own lines. Byram’s development has stagnated if not regressed. An RFA Petey who plays the more valuable position, contributes equally on total offense while still being a good goal scorer himself and is much better defensively is worth more on the market than Rantanen 1 year from UFA

Didn’t say he was old. Said he was old enough that when he signs his next contract at 28 he’d be smart to take the 8 years going to 36. A 25 year old Petey can take a 4 year contract now and still get one more big payday before turning 30

Adding bunch of players at the deadline doesn’t work. Just ask the Rangers and Bruins last year. You just gotta add the right piece or two.

For sure! I mean, we've lost half our games over the last two years when Nuke is out of the lineup but ya for sure, we don't sink.

Edit: 21-24-3 in games Nichushkin didn't play over the last 2 seasons. 65-19-9 with Nichushkin in the lineup.

Yep, definitely not sinking!

And who else has been out at the same time?

Nichuskin is not Mackinnon or Makar.

We added Lehkonen, Manson, Cogliano, and Sturm at the TDL two seasons ago.
Yeah, exactly what we needed. NY added Kane Tarasenko etc… they had too much of the same thing and it didn’t work. Boston added bunch of players too which on paper should have worked but didn’t. My point is it’s not about adding players for the sake of adding players. You gotta add the right players
