Borgen has been a healthy scratch and the 7th defenseman for Seattle for most of the season. He's only played in 16 games so far and wouldn't be anything more than a 3rd pairing on the Sabres just like he is on the Kraken. They already have a pretty similar player in Casey Fitzgerald right now to fill that role if need be.
Seattle has 8 NHL D though, and Hakstol's been rotating Borgen, Lauzon, Fleury, and Soucy in and out of the lineup, when everyone is healthy.
Borgen has mostly played ahead of Fleury until he recently went on covid protocol. He plays 3rd pair minutes, but his matchups aren't necessarily typical 3rd pairing duty. He's been paired some games with Dunn or Giordano, playing in different situations.
He's got more jump this season and seems quicker. He's smart with his pinches and activates from the blue line reading the play well. He's been solid and physical on one-on-ones and doesn't let his man skate around him. And he is good at walking the blue line and getting the puck on net with his heavy shot through traffic, avoiding the block.
He had a couple of bad turnovers early in the season where the puck was knocked off his stick leading to goals and Hakstol sat him for a stretch, but he's been a lot better than I had anticipated he'd be, even having watched him last year with the Sabres.
It is a shame he isn't getting consistent minutes with the Kraken, because I think he has the tools to be a top 4 guy with more experience.
I think he'd be a solid addition if re-acquired, but I think Francis and Botts are high on him also. But given Seattle's lack of younger players, a move around one of the Sabres LHD for Borgen might make some sense for both teams.
