Rumor: 2026 Trade Rumors and Free Agency: Offseason Edition

The way I see it currently:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Necas
Lehkonen - Nelson - XXX
L'Heureux - Kadri - Roy
Kelly - Svechkov - O'Connor

I think Hughes/Brindley have to battle for that spot next to Nelson.

Hughes is a much better player than Brindley right now. Anybody who watched them together with the Eagles will agree with that.

I’d love to see Hughes get that opportunity. I’m telling you, there’s a hell of a hockey player there.

Question now is… is it a Kulak re-signing or a trade for that top 4 LHD?

Or both?
We'd have to trade for a LD who's signed to a cheap contract if we want both. Anyone got a list of such candidates? Zellweger for example is RFA without a contract, no idea how much he would demand.

I agree, but Brindley is a natural winger whereas Hughes would have to learn to play the wing AND be effective providing offense at the NHL level.

I am excited for Hughes but I think he starts at a disadvantage.

If they just re-sign Kulak in the off season, and go into the season that way, my concern is they won’t be able to bring in the impact defenseman they’ve needed for years now at the deadline.

Cap space is a hurdle on it’s own after signing Kulak, but after trading Drury, Colton, and Val in the offseason, what assets are they using to bring in an impact defenseman?

No 1st until 2029, no meaningful prospects, very few obviously roster players of value they could shed without getting worse.

I see three possibilities to bring in an impact defenseman at the deadline. Nelson or Kadri are the first two. Both seem unlikely for the Avs to trade at the deadline, and Naz at least can be a dawg in the playoffs.

The other is more likely and also one of the worst guys to lose for the playoffs. Lehky.

Depends.

If kulak signs for 4.5-5, the Avs have space to trade for a 2-3M bottom pairing guy. Maybe a younger guy that can grow or has potential.

We had a super strong roster, dominated the NHL regular season, and still got humiliated in the Western Conference Final.

All 3 of these guys needed to go for a variety of reasons.

Have faith in trying out some new players.
You may be right but since Bednar is back it won’t matter much. . We’ll have games of pure domination, skating will be good, then get shut down in the playoffs as usual by physical stifling teams (Stars, Knights).

Landy - Mack - Necas
Kadri - Brock - Lehky
Kelly - Roy - LOC

Toews - Makar

Roughly 13m in cap space to fill in the blank (includes 2.3m cap overage carried over form last year and 25k for burying Svechkov).
Just trade Kadri if we're planning to play him on the wing.

Guessing management is not as down on Nelson as people on here? We'd get a haul at the current market for him though and we'd still have Kadri/Roy down the middle.
