I think Val would be good in Detroit. He'd really help their 5v5 defense, and would get way more PP time there than here.

The Wings have one of the best prospect pools in the league. If this goes down, I hope Colorado gets something back that has a semblance of upside.

Nichushkin scored 3 goals in 7 games in the playoffs just a year ago. The year before that he had 9 goals in 8 playoff games which is just absurd. I don’t think people understand how vital he is to this team’s playoff success. I know this place likes to write everyone off after one somewhat down season. I mean everyone wanted Alex Newhook’s head on a stick because he failed as a 2C in his sophomore season. But Nuke ain’t the problem here.

I know money has to go out somewhere, but I’d be hesitant for that money to be Nuke. He’ll make us remember what he brings to the table in the playoffs for someone else and that’s going to hurt.

I didn't even hate the roster we had, we had everything to win the cup. Bednar should've been gone 2 weeks ago.
Should've been gone after Dallas last year, IMO. Losing to that team while they were missing two of their best players, and you have Landy back, is just crazy.

However, the core loves him, so he's untouchable.

To me, the Val Nichushkin from 21-24 doesn't exist anymore.

We can’t afford a proper top 4 LHD without Nuke going out. Roy won’t do it. I know you want Kadri gone but he’s not going anywhere.

Also note the Nuke against Winnipeg leading the playoffs in goals was completely cocaine fueled and got nabbed right after that.

I don’t think you’re going to see that player again.

People always point to that year, but I think what he did during the cup run was the more realistic version.

9G 6A 15P in 20 games while being a two way force.

Val was Colorado's worst player in the postseason, by a lot. He was even brutal on the defensive side. Going back to Jan 1st, he scored only 8 goals and 19 assists (27p) in his final 53 games.

He was a monster during the Cup run, but he's slowly reverting back to his pre-'22 form, while making post-'22 bucks. Moving him saves a lot of cap space and helps the team get younger around the edges.

Also as RIAL mentions if there is a real rift between him and Mack, then you're never going to get Nuke fully motivated again. It's time to do the change of scenery trade while there is still some belief in that possibility.

It benefits the player, and the organization to move on at this point.

9 goals in 8 playoff games? I thought the Avs played more than that.

That's the problem. Which can't be ignored.

Colorado had 20 skaters with at least 5gp this postseason.

CF: 52.3% (18th)
SF: 50.0% (20th)
GF: 54.6% (11th)
xGF: 46.8% (18th)
SCF: 46.9% (19th)
HDCF: 36.9% (20th)

Unlike a lot of the team, who were only crushed in the Vegas series, Nichushkin was just as rough in the first two rounds (19th, 20th, 11th, 19th, 19th, 19th). Factor in the 4pts (2+2) in 12gp, not to mention how bad the eye test was (though that's subjective), and it was a brutal postseason for Val.

Or, he'll be hurt. The injuries aren't gonna get better with age.

Someone posted a graphic yesterday with 5v5 chance creation per 60 in the playoffs. MacKinnon was #1, Nuke was around #15-20, which is incredibly surprising considering the eye test and point totals

What's the common denominator in those numbers though?

I know which graph you're referring to; it was JFresh's chance share (or a similar name) category. The main driver is chances, aka shot attempts considered to be scoring chances. The flaw in that category, and why it isn't universally used, is that it doesn't consider whether those chances were blocked or missed the net.

I am happy to see the Avs move on from Nuke but if Nuke's getting the puck into scoring situations and Brockelstadt is flubbing weak shot attempts at defenders shin pads that shouldn't be a knock on Nuke.
