MacT wouldn’t be signed to that deal if Verbeek knew that he would just have to trade him a year later. It’s not like Cutter and Leo’s performances last year were completely out of nowhere. This is absolutely performance based, he’s fallen out of favor here, and we don’t want a repeat of the Gibson situation where his value deteriorates to a point that he’s sold for scraps
Agreed. If Verbeek wasn't a McT believer, he would have let him walk last offseason during those long, weird negotiations. He missed camp and had a really rough season, although he rallied slightly in the playoffs. I believe if he's dealt it will be because he's an asset other teams covet, not because he's damaged goods or he's already peaked. I personally hope he stays so he can redeem himself on the ice next season.

Maybe I’m dumb

But couldn’t you just get rid of Vatrano and Kreider if you want to be cost efficient…. And cross the mctavish bridge when you have to? Only reason to move mctavish now is if we’re bringing in someone making money

Unless you think a) his value is high right now , b) you think he’s topped off
Well, A or B could factor in. But it's also a year down the road. Pat may have altered his 30,000 ft view this season and his current plans may call for spending more money sooner. Not saying it's so, but future plans can change over the course of a full year. If so, you never want to be making a deal with your back to the wall and no good options. Better to move a guy a year too soon, than a year too late.

It's certainly shaping up to be one of our most interesting off seasons in many years. I'm good with it.

We have so much to lose! It’s fun again

He's fallen out of favor with Q. Q's contract is in its final year, and he has no year 3 option in his contract.

Who knows what coach and what system we get a year from now, maybe it's more in tune with Mac's strengths, maybe it's not.

Making a decision based on the coach in his final year is rash. Verbeek needs to decide if Mac is part of the core or not, not the coach.

I was just thinking about this the other day when I was thinking “what is a stunning move Verbeek could make that absolutely nobody saw coming”. Helle was what I landed on.

Let me be clear that I don’t think for any second it’s going to happen. But in a world where it does, you can start to talk yourself into why. Maybe his belief in Dostal is shaken, maybe he thinks that having the best goalie in the world is a way of improving his defense.

I don’t think I would agree with those things necessarily but if you really really think about it, I can see why it COULD happen. But you have to think pretty damn hard

Maybe I’m off on his value but I feel like the asset cost for Helle would have the ducks in a similar situation as they were a few years ago where the goalies great but the team in front of him isn’t good enough to do anything meaningful.

Send dostal the other way. We have young goalies in the system, goalies with size. Let hellebuck take us to glory land while he’s still elite. By the time he slows down, Clara is ready maybe.

Vatrano, yes, but simply getting rid of Kreider isn't necessarily cost effective as replacing his role will likely come at a similar or higher cap hit unless it's by a rookie. While I assume the majority of us agree it's not a position he should play, he's still utilized as our 1st line LW, which isn't a cheap one to replace externally.

In this case, Dreger is the dumb one as the same goes for McT. Would be great to improve on Mason, Kreider and Vats, but that's more about fit/ability rather than their price tags.
