Speculation: 2026-27 Trade/FA thread/Roster Thread - Waiting for the SCF to be over….

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
It's hard to imagine the Ducks bringing in Yakemchuk when they have a similar offensive RHD that needs defensive reps in Luneau. I think Spence makes more sense since he would add some stability to a 2nd or 3rd pair... but of course he's not big and defensively he's about average or slightly below from what i've seen. Maybe they move Zub? Forwards like Pinto and Btherson are more interesting to me...

I think Yakemchuk is a move that gets Anaheim closer to a SC down the road while Spence is a move that gets them closer to the playoffs next year. I would be surprised if Yakemchuk is available though.

That 25th + Spence + Grieg package isn't really attractive to me but we are running low on depth options to fill out the team given our expected spend on FAs. If it was possible to move Spence for a larger RHD I would be more inclined

Kotkaniemi is a strong buyout candidate. No one's taking that contract when they can potentially sign him for a minimum prove it deal later.

Then again never underestimate the ability of GMs to act like people who date messed up folks thinking "I can fix them!"
Kotkaniemi might be salvageable as a bottom-6 player. We have a difficult time attracting any free agent and this is very similar to the Ryan Strome contract.

I think adding Nikishin would just create a crazier logjam at LD but at least he and Zellweger have experience playing on the right side.

Maybe a three team deal with Ottawa makes it happen:

Ducks gets:
Nikishin, Kotkaniemi, Spence, Montgomery. We fill our blueline with young defensemen in their prime. Kotkaniemi essentially takes Mctavish’s 3rd line role. Montgomery can be our sweetener, and we like big fast forward prospects.

Ottawa gets: Mctavish
They get to add a young hometown center and Eklund as they move on from Brady. Both forwards can break out as 23 year olds playing top 6 minutes.

Carolina gets: Ottawa’s 2026 1st (25th overall), Ottawa’s 2026 2nd, and Vatrano
Hurricanes are great at analytics and probably saw that Nikishin would be too expensive and he wouldn’t be able to beat out Slavin or Miller whom are both very young still. Vatrano plays with the speed and grit that they like and if he can get back to being a 20+ goal scorer his contract would be a big bargain. Got to root for Frankie making a big bounce back year after losing his brother…. Carolina likely reallocates their money with efficient signings or another smart trade, and they have more picks to make those moves.

I wonder if st. Louis would at all be interest in 25 + spence + for parayko, but who knows. More than likely that is just getting too convoluted.

I would guess whatever happens is something/someone we haven't even considered or talked about.

Also, doubtful st. Louis even wants picks now, at least 2026. They already have four firsts this year.

But the point is you might not have to pay him that much. I think a few weeks ago Friedman had said if he's bought out there was serious talk about him not being able to get more than a league minimum deal, or he'd be done in the NHL. So why take him on a bad contract other than as a favor to the Canes?
