Kotkaniemi is a strong buyout candidate. No one's taking that contract when they can potentially sign him for a minimum prove it deal later.
Then again never underestimate the ability of GMs to act like people who date messed up folks thinking "I can fix them!"
Kotkaniemi might be salvageable as a bottom-6 player. We have a difficult time attracting any free agent and this is very similar to the Ryan Strome contract.
I think adding Nikishin would just create a crazier logjam at LD but at least he and Zellweger have experience playing on the right side.
Maybe a three team deal with Ottawa makes it happen:
Ducks gets:
Nikishin, Kotkaniemi, Spence, Montgomery. We fill our blueline with young defensemen in their prime. Kotkaniemi essentially takes Mctavish’s 3rd line role. Montgomery can be our sweetener, and we like big fast forward prospects.
Ottawa gets: Mctavish
They get to add a young hometown center and Eklund as they move on from Brady. Both forwards can break out as 23 year olds playing top 6 minutes.
Carolina gets: Ottawa’s 2026 1st (25th overall), Ottawa’s 2026 2nd, and Vatrano
Hurricanes are great at analytics and probably saw that Nikishin would be too expensive and he wouldn’t be able to beat out Slavin or Miller whom are both very young still. Vatrano plays with the speed and grit that they like and if he can get back to being a 20+ goal scorer his contract would be a big bargain. Got to root for Frankie making a big bounce back year after losing his brother…. Carolina likely reallocates their money with efficient signings or another smart trade, and they have more picks to make those moves.
