That's a big yikes and why I'm skeptical even a productive, experienced center like Nelson would bring enough on his own to do enough damage. (Let alone someone like ROR who at this stage is even less able to shoulder that load.) Even with Leonard replacing Raddysh...I dunno. I'm just not a believer in Mangiapane. I don't think he's hard enough to play against and even struggles at the regular season pace. Hard to imagine he finds another level. They have some alternatives like Milano but their winger depth also isn't strong. It makes me question a bit whether being the top bidder on Nelson, who should have many suitors, is really the play to make. He can be the conduit to having a legit third line but they're definitely going to need to mix and match and not go uber conservative with a couple of low impact types.

Re: Rakell. True enough on the remaining term. Didn't realize it was that long. He can play both wings but at 32 in a couple of months? Pass.
I think you're just pretty severely overrating what an NHL third line provides in terms of offense / underrating Mangiapane and Raddysh have provided at ES. You're not going to have 9 forwards that all put up 50+ points.

Wonder whether Middlestadt goes the other way. If he does then I'm fine with it, Caps just don't have that kind of asset to offer going the other way

What’s the latest on Donato? I’m not seeing anything. I still like that idea, he can play W/C.

I’m guessing once Nelson goes, we’ll see more dominoes start to fall (like Suter, Laughton). Not sure on the winger market like Boeser.

After seeing the price ... right call to stay out of that one lol

I haven't seen anything on Donato to Ottawa beyond Friedman listing it as a possible landing spot a couple of days ago.

I think Boeser and Marchand will wait on any potential Rantanen deal

As predicted, Canes can't resign Rantanen and he's traded out West.

Thanks, looks like the Caps propably don't even have to get into these ridiculously high prices since the biggest contenders in the Metro are decimated by injuries and trades.

Wow some middle of the night fireworks.
Ill have to catch up on the returns.

The Hurricanes blow up their team and the Devils lose Hughes. We might have won the deadline and did nothing.

You know what, the Caps pretty much made their moves this past summer. Got a #1 goalie in LT, got #1 Offensive D-man in Chychrun, Got #1/#2 C PLD, signed D-man Roy, stabilized 3C with Eller, and rebuilt the 4th line. Maybe one or two moves for depth on D, F, or a better 3rd goalie option(this is a reach, but if we had to use Shep then the Caps are in serious trouble!).

Canes owner has some issues spending money for star players. First they don't want to pay Guentzel and now Rantanen. They gave up good assets for both. Just dumb GM'ing.
Rantanen didn’t want to sign there, don’t think it had anything to do with $ on offer

I read the Canes offer was BS and all deferred money. Players dont like those type of games (see Washington Nats). Cheap owners gonna cheap

Prices this deadline are astronomical for guys who aren't that great of adds. I didn't want to make a move before this chaos started and I definitely don't now.
Agreed one of the years for a sellers market. The amount of meh players going for high draft capital.... Leonard will be the secret sauce of the 3rd line.

I mean... do nothing but be amazed at the prices going around while your chances for Playoff run only go up? Yes, please.

Ryan Leonard is the Caps main trade deadline addition. That said, i do hope they get Ryan Chesley signed too, even though he's not going to be in the NHL this season.

What a typical one does, yes. But for this team? With how Strome has fared 5v5 lately? I wouldn't want Mangiapane being even the second best player on such a line. As-is he's the first (likely the second once Leonard's in the mix). It's not even about the points per se as being harder to play against as well. Mange seems to get ragdolled a bit on the regular. Not to say I'd prefer Tanev to him but I do think Donato/Zucker/Palmieri are upgrades. Is it enough of one in a seller's market to warrant it if they're to be centered by Eller? Maybe not.

Re: Nelson...Ritchie. Wow. There's some injury stuff but quite a get for NYI.

We'll see what the return is for Rantanen but the Caps position may have improved merely based on events elsewhere in the division.

I’m out on these prices. And not sure I can remember such a one-sided TDL in terms of one conference doing everything big. The biggest trades so far in the East are Tampa trading the farm for two third liners, the Rangers and Devils overpaying for bottom pair defensemen, and Florida hoping Seth Jones can find his game again.

Seller’s market for sure.

Its way to early and alot of hockey left.

But the playoff bracket is starting to get that 98 run feel.

If we can avoid the Rangers round one and get the whatever left of Devils/Canes round 2. Its looking nice.
