you are right but do you believe ghost of Eller, Mangiapane, Frank, and Raddysh and so on will score the timely goal required to win the cup like smithpelly, eller, connolly stephenson? think slight upgrades over unimportant players without breaking the bank could do wonders for their chances. ROR at 3c without giving up the farm would be ideal to me. I get the side that doesnt want to give up the impressiver future the caps have built
2018 was magical but our superstar was much younger and we had our franchise center still. You can’t compare those two teams. Proud to be a doom and gloomer if it means not just blindly ignoring areas where a team can improve.

But the moves you're advocating for won't fix the lack of a superstar or franchise center. Instead, they might possibly (not even guarantee) upgrade our 3C for a 1st++++.

The moves this team needs the most aren't available right now. It sucks, but that's reality.

For perspective's sake:
Name any team in the East with 4 strong F lines (I don't think there are any, and I think WSH is the closest to it)
Name any team in the East with 3 strong F lines (and name the lines, esp the 3rd or 4th line) ; I think TBL/FLA/TOR have a strong Top-6 but things dwindle very quickly after

Tampa post-trades and then Florida with Lundell are the strongest, deepest forward groups IMO. That said, Tampa's depth is still iffy.

The issue with the Caps is Strome's 5v5 decline in production and then also trying to project just how much older key players like Ovechkin and Carlson will have in the tank when every single shift is a sprint.

Boeser will reportedly be moved. I wonder if the Caps could include Mangiapane so as to help VAN's playoff chances?

Seeing how we just added to our bottom six, management disagrees with your assessment.

Have to think this is just a Vrana replacement, no? Just A Guy that they have marginally more trust in. Otherwise, even with a dwindling winger rental market, it doesn't make much sense.
That's my first reaction too, but why on Earth did we pay a second rounder for such dog water?

I do watch him play, and he's not washed. His legs are still there. He's still very good along the boards and strong defensively. Mangiapane, Raddyish, and Duhaime all have significantly higher xGF%s w/ Eller than w/o him. His WoWY charts paint the picture of a guy who makes his teammates better. I am not saying he can't be upgraded or that he's a perfect 3C but he's far from washed and he's not nearly the bum he's being made out to be.

Definitely agree. Eller isn't a liability at all. He's just not the perfect fit for the wing talent we have; not the guy that can help leverage the offensive promise of his wings. That's never been his game, so we knew what we were getting into with him. It's certainly not the end of the world if he stays put.

But you said in the trade thread that you hope the people that wanted to make a trade are happy with this lackluster one, and I don't think that's quite fair. If GMCP had posted a poll here proposing the "Beauvillier for our 2025 2nd" trade, I don't think it would have gotten ANY votes, especially not if one of the options was "No, let's hold on to that pick and see if it can help us land someone better."

And while this does sting for sure, Beauvillier IS a good player. Certainly not who I was looking for, but the dude works hard, has aptitude in both zones, and has demonstrated an NHL level he could absolutely get back to.

When you watch him closely he is so def with his stick and positioning. he often ends up with the puck on his stick which is good. He doesn’t have breakaway speed so he always gets caught.

100%, and it would be 100% positive if he didn't lack offensive vision. He's never had that bang-bang capability. He does the work to get the puck on his stick frequently, but the space around him closes at that point, and he's not creative enough to turn those moments into offense. So he gets trapped or moves the puck to safe space. Doesn't routinely make BAD plays, and he's strong on the boards so getting trapped isn't terrible, but he lacks the vision to make the good/great play.

In those postseason, you want each line coming onto the ice to hit like a punch. Scoring line, shutdown line -- definitive impact. Eller's line is typically just a PAUSE button. They don't score much, and they don't get scored on much. It's a wash. It won't hurt us versus teams that aren't deep and don't roll 4 lines, but that's rare in the playoffs...

Lots of teams loading up gives me a little FOMO, but TDL isn’t over until 3pm and i absolutely trust our brain trust to do the right thing. They see a lot more than we do. We see what things look like after 3pm.

also, the Milano situation is interesting. Assume we are going to hear he will stay on LTIR for remainder of year. Could be schnanigans or could be legit. But clearly they are positioning him for LTIR for rest of year meaning we won’t incur a cap hit on him this year.

After doing some reading Beauvillier has been much better this year than I originally given him credit for. He's been a very efficient 5v5 scorer and it has not just been a shooting percentage bender. Better fit for us than B. Tanev

I think he's an upgrade on Frank, even if it's not as big of one as I would've liked and for a higher price than I'd expect.

Beauvillier has 13 goals this season (63 games). Tanev has 16 goals in his past 126 games.

Both went for late 2nds.

Laughton return is still an overpay but not as ridiculous as I thought it was going to be

nah youre right its actually smart to trade a 2nd round picks for scrubs

who needs a good middle 6 center or anything, thank god we have lars eller

my name is really that big you remember everything i post hahahhahaha
If you don’t like this move then it makes me more onboard with it considering you’ve been wrong about pretty much everything you said about the front office over the past 12 months or so.

I never like the prices when we buy at the deadline. Today is no different. Hopefully we dont do anything else stupid today.

I also hate the price we paid for FB we are going to be forced to play him over people earning jerseys on a 1st place team all season.
