Now that's a proper way to begin a relationship with a player. Not going to happen. 1st overall picks don't get traded anyway, nevertheless 1st overall pick players, in a way like this.
Meh... Inform them from the start. The trade can be made anytime after the lotto drawing.
Taking a player with a deal already in place in order to trade him is not uncommon in the NBA

Just take your highest rated talent if you have the #1 pick, fit matters for competitive teams not for basement clubs

If you have Hagens rated #1 just take him #1, we'll still be drafting top 5 the next year so there will be plenty of time to address the defense later, what we still need more than anything is true high-end talent

What's better than two legit top six centers? Three legit top six centers.

Alternatively, you now have a fallback in case Celebrini or Smith get hurt or disappoint.

Until Hagens inevitably proves too small to play center at the NHL level and you just spent the 1st overall pick on a small skill winger.

We shouldn't even entertain the thought of getting the 1st overall, that would mean that the Sharks out of the McKenna race because of the 2 in 5 rule.

Rather have Schaefer or Martone anyways.

Notably, there has never been a successful 5'10" center in the history of the NHL, please do not Google it
Or successful wingers 5'10 or smaller.

Guess we don't want a player like henri richard, theo fleury, st louis, samsonov, dionne, mullen, stan mikita, johnny gaudreau, steve yzerman.

The last time a center 5'10 or under from your list played in the NHL was 1989.

Those are only of the hall of fame players that i selected. So yzerman wasn’t still playing in the 2000's? St louis? Gaudreau?

If he ends up a top center or top winger it really doesn't matter, you are just way to fixated on size.

And if you want more up to date, how about crosby at 5'11?

Yzerman was at least 5'11 and played his prime when that was closer to average height in the NHL. Far more importantly, there is absolutely zero reason to think Hagens is Steve Yzerman.

It's not like I'm arguing we should take Leo Carlsson over Connor Bedard. Martone is just as skilled as Hagens and doesn't exacerbate our already existing problem of building a top six around three forwards with below average size.

According to nhl.com, yzerman was 5'10. And yzermans prime was mid 90's to early 2000's.

The average height in the late 80's to 1994 was 6'0, after 94 to the lockout it was over 6'1.

Yzerman's prime was in the late 80s to early 90s and hockeydb says 5'11 but it doesn't matter because nobody has argued Hagens projects to be a Steve Yzerman level talent.

Luckily for Hagens he's currently listed at 5'11 and above the magical height requirement to be successful.
Still well below average NHL height. Horrible fit when we already have three forwards we’re counting on who are also below average sized.
