I still need convincing, a lot of convincing, that this tournament moves the needle with anyone other than Canadian fans. The ads at the rink and the size of the crowd tell me no one else cares.
I mean I think it's like this in all sports when it comes to prospects, obviously Canada cares more about hockey than any other country about any other sport, maybe Japan with baseball IDK lol. In any case I think hockey has the most amount of die hard fans who care about prospects prior to their arrival with the pro club. At least comparatively in terms of sport popularity. Nothing to back that up, just seems that way. WJC has to be the most notable and viewed prospect tournament in sports speaking strictly in terms of watching for prospects and not the spectacle, and maybe that is mostly because of Canada? March Madness is probably the biggest non pro sports tournament in terms of spectacle.

Are you forgetting about soccer?

Aren't all soccer tournaments pro? Or do you mean countries obsession with the sport? Is there any one country more obsessed with soccer than others? I guess it's kind of a world wide obsession overall. They don't really have prospects though do they?

Canada in hockey reminds me a lot of New Zealand in rugby and to a degree, Brazil in football.

What I don't subscribe to is the notion that hosting the WJC in Canada is "good for the game" per se.

It's ridiculous how often Canada gets to host this tournament. And attendance numbers aren't magically near 100% either for these tournaments in Canada. They struggle with the same challenges as the tournaments held in other countries.

I've read that when it comes to the WJC that the tournaments held in Canada are the largest revenue-generating events for the IIHF outside of the WC. Hockey Canada only gives a fraction of the revenues to the IIHF, but with the TV deals and sponsorships in place it's way more money than any of the other countries can gin up. Apparently the IIHF is hugely reliant on this revenue to fund all of the other IIHF events around the world each year, as well. So it might be unfair on the surface but all the money generated from having the WJC in Canada is really a major part of growing the game globally.

Was talking about countries obsessed with a sport.

I dont think percent of capacity is anywhere near as good an indicator as sheer attendance. I mean if it’s a 7000 seat arena at 80 percent full is it as good as a 16,000 seat arena at 80% full?
I'm not arguing it’s “fair” that Canada hosts so much, but the U20 obviously generates more interest and income there. I’d be watching these games if they were on when I could, regardless of where they were played, but obviously when they are in Europe I miss most of them. As does a LOT of the relatively huge US/Canadian market. Life ain't fair, especially when it’s a business.

Adam Sykora had a whopping 22:51 minutes of ice time today. The 2nd forward with the most had almost 3 minutes less. He was out there for everything and is going to be relied on extremely heavily.

Gabe had 15:03 of ice time. Coaching staff used the top 3 lines pretty evenly, first line only averaged a couple more minutes.

Fortescue had 18:49 minutes of ice time. Second among defensemen. He was out there for a lot of PK time.

In the two periods I watched Sykora played a lot. He got a lot of power play time. He did a lot of grunt work.....forechecking hard, battling for pucks. He just had the one assist but he was very active and hard to miss. Slovakia has a lot of good forwards. 9 of them have been drafted. I remember Repcik from last year who isn't one of them but had a couple goals today. Their forwards are their strength and Gajan is a good goalie.

Perreault was great too.....and Fortescue played pretty well. His assist came on the first goal of the game and the way today's game was going that goal was a big deal......as Norway had almost taken a lead several times by then. If they had got the first goal that might have changed things.

Perrault was really impressive tonight. This is the 3rd of 4th time I’ve watched him. He doesn’t jump off the page like Smith and Leonard but when it’s all said and done he’s the most involved offensively. Ugly stride but gets around just fine.

Fortescue impressed me with his skating for a bigger guy. I imagine he will really shine in some of the closer games.

Gauthier plays a very unlikable brand of hockey. He’s clearly very talented, has a great shot, skates well and has size. But he comes off as pretty lazy. Made a couple of very head scratching giveaways tonight. None of them were as bad as Perrault’s, but they weren’t great. He strikes me as a player that will need a lot of one on one coaching.

Agreed on Gauthier, i seem him as a very overrated prospect. Seems like a really dumb player, he literally just shoots everything without thinking, some of his shot selections are just awful. He made a pass and even the announcers couldnt believe it.

I watch a lot of BC hockey and yesterday was one of the worst games I have seen Perreault play FWIW. He is that good.

Yeah I wouldn’t say he was dynamite last night by any means. But he created a lot of offense. The announcers were showering him with praise too. Sky is the limit!

i mean he's been very impressive for a freshman in college but it's not like he can just do whatever he wants there. he's still challenged at that level, physically at least.

i didn't catch the whole game but i saw the assist as well as the giveaway for the shg against, but what i did see he looked pretty inconsequential for the most part. he looked like that the first college game i saw him play too, took him a few games to figure out the pace and get a feel for the level of play. imagine this will be very similar, esp with the big ice surface adjustment.

would expect him to increase his impact over the course of the tournament, will be interesting to see where that ceiling can get to this year ...isn't physically at a point where he can dominate play but don't think putting up roughly a pt/gm in a significant role is beyond him.

I actually liked a bunch of what I saw from Cutter in the first game. Great in transition and works the walls reasonably well.

Dumb shot selection is just a thing with him.
