Moore skates around Canada who were stuck on a long shift and makes it 4-2. Fortescue left the ice before the goal was scored but helped get the initial shift going that hemmed Canada in.

Fortescue with another solid shift keeping Canada pinned in.

Celebrini leading the tournament in goals scored that don't count.

Canada with another on the PP, Celebrini with a similar pass to Perreault's that deflects in. 4-5

Scramble in front, Allard scores on a long shift. 5-5 Canada with the stronger play so far in the 3rd.

Going to OT, semi uneventful 3rd but it got chippy and Canada pretty much dominated the play. Very sloppy 3rd from the US.

Overall not a great game for the US, but not terrible either. After the first game I thought the top line with Snuggerud and Gauthier were clearly their best. In this game it was Perreault's line even into the third when Canada was driving the play. Fortescue had a solid game overall skating well and saw some time on PK1. USA will have to be better than that on the whole if they want to win gold.

Both teams looked like shit on and off. To be expected. Takes until games 2-3 of the actual tournament till we see what the teams really look like.

Just realized all the SVK games are on at 6am EST. That stinks, guess i’m not watching those live.

USA vs SVK game is also at 6AM

This is why I selfishly hate when they have the tournament in Europe.
Perfect on the days or if you can work from home.

today's game was one of the worst overall i've seen from perrault tbh. now to be clear, it's one game, a pre-tourny meaningless game at that - it doesn't have the slightest reflection on him in the big picture. obviously the assist was a very nice look, and he had 2 other quick play set ups for teammates where you saw the soft hands and vision...but overall this was a poor game. he had several pretty awful turnovers, failed to get the puck out of the zone a couple times, was on the ice for at least the first 2 goals against etc...and he just wasn't on the puck generating much. everything he was involved in was one touch plays etc...

again, doesn't mean anything. saying he had a bad game is not saying he's not a fantastic prospect or in any way negative towards him as a player - everybody has bad games, and this was in a game that meant nothing. hell panarin looked like he could barely handle a pass throughout the preseason.

i was pleasantly surprised with fortescue today though. was very solid defensively, his skating was impressive, and had handful of heady/skilled plays with the puck in the o and d zones. much like gabe's poor game, it was a meaningless game that doesn't change any views about him. i do think it was a lot more important for him to play well in these pre-tourny games though to nail down his role/ice time and more importantly, gain some confidence at this level. gabe's a gamer and a very confident kid, i have no doubt he'll be one the more impactful players on the us roster in the most important games.

Canada looks like shit
The story of too many of these IIHF tourneys is
USA starts strong but doesn’t always get stronger as it goes on
while Canada, Swedes, Finns almost always do trend better game by game

I guess it applies more to U18 than U20 but it kind of makes sense due to the NTDP familiarity of players. The US are more of a proper team by default and has relatively less to gain by gelling together over the tournament.

The WJC should alternate between Europe and North America. It's insane how much the IIHF caters to Hockey Canada when it comes to the WJC.

From 2009 to 2025, 10 of 17 tournaments are hosted by Canada. For comparison:

USA: 2
Sweden: 2
Finland: 1
Russia: 1
Czechia: 1
Just keep bringing it to Halifax, its always the best atmosphere and the rink is full for pretty much every game.
