The 3rd and 4th line look OLD. The most recent generation can't come soon enough - we are in a transition period.

Kadri, Dubois, Duchene, Reinhart, Scheifele, Tavares - all guys who are either too old or not good enough.
Maybe Kadri.

I'd find a way to include : Thomas, Kyrou, Batherson.
I am NOT a Suzuki fan.

If Canada wins Gold, I'll be surprised. In the meantime, I'll put $500 on the U.S..

If Canada wins Gold, I'll be shocked. In the meantime, I'll put $500 on the U.S..
Mark Stone is 30 and Anthony Cirelli is only 25, so even after a couple more years, two thirds of that fourth line won't be too old. The other guys will be up there in age, but at the moment they're all playing great, so it's quite likely that at least some of them will still be worthy of a spot on this roster two years from now.

I hope you're right - I prefer my players under 30. I sure wish someone young was ready to replace Crosby and Marchand and Stamkos.

Projecting forward to 2024.

Gaudreau-Matthews-Matthew

Slavin-Fox
Werenski-McAvoy
Quinn-Pesce

Demko
Oettinger
Knight

Most of the forward core is easy to pick. Very few spots I think are available. Thompson, Hughes, and Robertson could be among the newcomers. Defense might need some newer pieces towards the bottom of the lineup. I think our top 3 is great, but the defense isn't too strong after that. We need some of these defensemen to improve. I don't want us to have to use players like McDonagh, Suter, Carlson anymore, and Seth Jones isn't the answer either. Goalies need to be turned over to the younger crop. Hellebuyck and Gibson are too inconsistent. Demko is already better than them, and I think Oettinger will be soon. Knight is going to be very good in a few years.

Not just under 30, but mid-20s realistically. The average age of any best on best edition Team Canada, and any elite team for that matter, should be 25-27. If it skews older than that, close to 30 or over 30...I wouldn't pick them as favorites to take home the hardware.

Hard to pick a team 18 months away but for me Canada would be this

Line 1: Stamkos-McDavid-Huberdeau

Three 100 point players with a top tier goal scorer and top tier playmaker along for the ride with the best player in the world (I was tempted to go with Tom Wilson on McDavid’s wing, but he need to cement himself as a more consistent 70+ point plus player to have a chance)

Line 2: Crosby-MacKinnon-Marchand

Instant chemistry as all three of these players train together, this line assumes that Bergeron has since retired. Can play in all situations and should overwhelm opponents that try to line match against the McDavid top line

Line 3: Marner-Point-Kyrou

Sprint relay team. Marner and Point also useful penalty killers. Can be used as a matchup line as Point and Marner have very good defensive ability

Line 4: Cirelli-O’Reilly-Thomas

So many great defensive options to chose from. Had a hard time leaving out Danault, Mangiapane, Bergeron (assuming he’s not retired) or Couturier, but ultimately Cirelli and O’Reilly are top 5 defensive forwards in the league and Thomas has proven over the last 12 months that he’s an top tier playmaker and matchup centreman. Quite the overwhelming 4th line

Also under consideration:

Barzal, Dubois, Batherson, Couturier, Scheifele, Mangiapane, Bergeron, Stone

Pair 1: Toews-Makar

Best pair in the league and best défenseman in the league who just won a Stanley Cup together. No further explanation needed

Pair 2: Chabot-Ekblad

Excellent puck moving pair and rush leading pair. Some concerns about Chabot’s in zone play but when he’s not playing 27 mins a night he’s proven to be excellent. Ekblad might be second only to Makar in goal scoring ability from the blue blue

Pair 3: Theodore-Doughty

Thought long avoir with going with Byram instead of Theodore here (especially in 18 months) but for now Theodore’s excellent last few seasons prior to this past down season keep him in contention. When healthy Doughty can still put up points and less the rush, his absence was noticeable in the first round against Edmonton

Also under consideration: Bryam, Létang, Pietrangelo, Dobson, Weegar, Pelech, Pulock, Hamilton, Reilly, Nurse

Goaltenders

Binnington
Jarry
Kuemper

This is a weak group. Binnington has shown he can carry a team but needs to be more consistent. Jarry had a breakout season but needs to prove it wasn’t a fluke. Kuemper was mediocre in the playoffs despite winning the cup. Without Price the goalie issues have become apparent for Canada

Recap

A stacked group up front filled with every attribute, a high end défense group that perhaps lacks stay at home names but has elite puck moving and overwhelming offensive options, and weak goaltending. Whilst in Beijing this team would have been a clear favourite, until better goaltending emerges they are only slight or cofavourites in my opinion. Hopefully Sakic is named GM

Looks good so far, they should bring back Russia as well. I wonder if they would be favorites against Canada due to big gap in goaltending.

The Finnish and Swedish Hockey Federations would immediately pull out of any competition involving Russia.
Well currently that's the case but who knows how it is in 2024. Probably will still be true, though.

Team Canada 2024 still looking for those big, fast, physical, wingers that can shoot the puck:

Eight different countries - their choice or will there be some pre-qualifiers? Sorry if this has been mentioned in this thread already.

Hopefully Russia will be good to go by then. I'd like to see Ovechkin suit up for Russia one more time.
