“Established” was for “right now.” It’s hard to project two years out, during which time an unknown number of players could break out. If I had to give it a shot:
Quinn-McDavid-Marner
Huberdeau-Thomas-MacKinnon
Lafreniere-Crosby-Marchand
Point-Suzuki-McTavish
Batherson, Byfield

Byram-Makar
Chabot-Dobson
Power-Ekblad
Chychrun, Drysdale

Hart
Jarry
someone not under consideration right now

That roster might lean a little too young, imo, though its hard to argue against any of these guys individually. The forward group in particular just seems like it includes some overly bullish projections for some of the young players, particularly given February 2024 is only 1 1/2 years out. So I have a hard time seeing Quinn (just to pick on one guy who I really like, but who only has 2 NHL games under his belt) developing into a top-6 forward for Canada by then. I hope he does, but I wouldn't bet on it. Maybe someone more developed and already a top-6 forward like Kyrou would have a better chance to play a prominent role.

Also, if someone like Armstrong (or Francis, or Sakic) is named executive GM, they'd likely lean more conservative and you'd likely see someone like Cirelli, or even O'Reilly (though he'll be 33 by then), anchor one of the bottom lines. If past precedent from the Yzerman days are any indication, anyway...plus, they're playing on NHL-sized ice surfaces, presumably with NHL refereeing so the makeup of the roster could be different than what you'd see in an IIHF event. For example, Tom Wilson will still be only ~30 years old in February 2024.

The U.S. will win. The players on the U.S. team will be peaking in 2024. They are also due - you can't have THAT strong a team and bleep the bed every time.

1996 was a long time ago... Agree the team is gorgeous though.

It is a YOUNG roster. Canada's lack of players from the late teen drafts is showing.

One of these times, and I believe it will be 2024, everything will fall into place and the U.S. will win.

Then Canada will have to reclaim the title in 2028(?) - when our newest wave of players hits their peak - and the American players suddenly look "old".

That's true. It would be nice to have Russia here so they could throw another best-on-best failure on the stack.

But they'll tell you that 2024 was their year, just like 2010 was with their parchment paper-thin defense and roster full of KHL stiffs. And that 1987 doesn't count because Hawerchuk hooked some guy. And that 1991 doesn't count because their communist dictatorship imploded. And that 1996 doesn't count because of something or other...etc, etc.

Teams: Canada, Sweden, Russia, USA, Finland, Czech, Swiss, Germany, Slovakia and then a play in tournament for the last spot would be my preference.

I think the US is easily the best team on paper headed into 2024 and that hurts very much to type out.

Just look at that defense and goaltending. Their goaltending is easily more secure and even has better depth to pick from than Canada. The superstar forwards and especially Centers also help.

It will mostly be a matter of coaching and tactics, even when they've supplanted themselves as the top gold medal contending team in the group stages, they either shit the bed completely when it matters or will win the entire thing.

The US team looks very good.

But I don't think there is a defense anyone can put together that will stop McDavid, Makar, and MacKinnon (all in their prime) as they attack in waves. I think this will become obvious when these guys hit the ice.

Hopefully, they plan this tournament properly without gimmicks.

That's why I hate the NHL.

This league is too imperialistic and hurts ice hockey.

Rather than leaving a window for the IIHF to organize world championships in September, the NHL is looking to crush.
