World Cup: 2024 World Cup - rosters

Really hard to say with Canada. Well, sort of. A year and a half is still a lot of hockey. Heck, Connor Bedard could light the NHL on fire next year and he'd be considered. Lafreniere could break out of his shell this year too.

Right now if I am picking for February of 2024 perhaps it looks like this:

The roster looks great.. not a politics board. I would've gone Sorokin over Bob. Not sure if Kuzy could play. C depth is weak with or without him (compared to the big nations, not my Czechs). Wingers are elite. Beyond elite. D is okay. Goalies are insanely good.

From what I gather the NHL Russians want to play and the NHLPA is suporting them; but certain federations will boycott if this occurs (even if it's not a formal or official team Russia). So we're sort of at a stand-still.

Historically speaking that is probably right. I think anyone in the 'big 5' can win it. In this case... if the chosen elite goalie is elite they can win. Goalies can make a huge difference in one and done elimination type games.

The NHL is ever capable of f***ing up things that should be easy. Schedule the tournament for February 2024. Host all of the games in North America this time. Delay deciding on Russia until the summer, then include Russia if it is feasible or go without a Russian team if other countries threaten to pull out over Russia's invasion. No gimmick Russia but not Russia team.

Yeah, I don't even think the European federations will be interested much in a NA centric NHL commercial venture if it involves the currently banned teams even when this is all over.

NHL appeasers got themselves in a pickle.

If countries put the NHL in a situation where it has to choose between Czech Republic/Sweden/Finland or Russia, the NHL will basically have two choices - play without Russia (or a Russian gimmick team) or not play the tournament. I do not think that the league would bother publicly appearing to choose Russia over those countries given the current invasion and risking the obvious negative coverage.

You have more confidence in the NHL doing the right thing than I have.

I just wish somebody come to their senses and give me my 8 game summit series Canada v USA. No fuss, not muss. 8 great games and the NHL and NHLPA are swimming in cash.

Let them play but only if they represent Ukraine. Putin would blow all his gaskets.

As of now I think it's the NHLPA pulling the strings on Russia's behalf.
The Russians pay dues to the organization. As such it's the NHLPA's duty to represent their interests as much as anybody's.
All players are welcome. If this offends you, fine, don't play.
It's a catch-22. Which is likely why there's talks of delaying it.
