I wouldnt say they have A better roster name for name than Canada, but they are a matchup nightmare for Canada. Connor-Matthews-Kane line rivals a Kane/Huberdeau-mcdavid-mackinnon line
Mcdavid and Mackinnon would destroy that line or any other line in the tournament. lets see the Us win a actual best on best tournament or even make a final before crowing them. Didn't even win a game at the 2016 world cup lol. Evander Kane is not making team Canada

The way Kuzmenko started this season, he creates some tough choices for the already stacked Russia’s winger selection.

However, given the fact he’s a right handed player (and we only have Panarin and Ovechkin), he might get some preference

Nice start!

Whenever the next tournament rolls around, the US roster looks like it's going to be extremely dynamic and fun to watch up front.

Gaudreau - Matthews - Tkachuk
Connor - Eichel - DeBrincat
Guentzel - Hughes - Robertson
Kreider - Larkin - Kane
B. Tkachuk - Zegras - Thompson
Caufield - Boldy - Terry
Miller - Beniers - Rust
Batherson - Nelson - Tuch
Hartman - Trocheck - Oshie
Lee - Keller - Wheeler

Will be very interesting to see what a roster eventually looks like. There's almost too much skill here that some guys may be left off for guys to fill specific roles.
Batherson is Canadian.

I 100% agree Canada would still be a heavy favourite but the speed and skill up front for USA will be an extremely tough matchup. I disagree though in that Kane has a decent shot at making TC. 2 years down the road though maybe you’re right.

Not really. Its way too early for him to knock out some of the more proven russian wingers.

We relay on 2-way play completely. Our forwards are good both ways and have to be to make up for our D. Goalies are ok and so should our special teams be. We cant run-n-gunwith Canada and USA, but we can upset both on a good day

Reading most posts here I figure it would be better to have a World Cup with only one game - USA vs Canada. Seems to me they are the 2 only relevant teams here?

The US hasnt won a best v best since 1996, they haven't even won an IIHF World Championship since 1960 (1933 if you want to get even more technical, since Olympic tournaments counted as World Championship tournaments).

The field is far more open than ever before.

I'll discuss Finland.

The thing about Finland is that sure, they can upset great teams on any given day, we all know that. But can they upset 3-4 great teams to take home this level of championship? because that is what it really comes down to, Best on bests at the senior level in North America aren't the Skodas in a European rink, not even close.

They could possibly do it, but you have to wonder about their chances doing so. We know Finland is the best they have ever been, but world cup winning best in a Tournament in North America? Hmm...............it will be their toughest test. They came close in 2005 and on paper they will have a better team then in 2005, but they also flamed out at the last World Cup. I'd give them a 40% chance this time around,

Lot of pressure on them too, fans there expect a lot now, especially with media puffing up. They can't really go in thinking underdog story anymore, and with that comes a different type of feeling for the staff and players once games get underway, a new kind of mental situation.

We will see.

I would actually argue that Team Finland would probably be a worse match for Canada than USA. I feel Canada has better top-end talent and way better centers than USA. Finland on the other hand, has better 2-way forwards. Canada outmatches USA in C-depth and talent IMO. USA has lots of deppth to choose from, but their C:s are 2 steps behind. Finland gets outmatched on D by both, so our forwards will have to make up for it. In a run-n-gun match we will loose to both, but playing defensively well we have a chance. Special teams all have pretty good lineups to ice, so I think most games will be decided on theese.

All true but that's history now, I am pretty damn confident the U.S will be a different animal this time around, they are going to be a tough, tough out this time around.

I`d say special teams are what will decide the next WC. All teams are that good. I have no problem facing Russia or USA. We usually win against them no matter what team they bring. Canada and sweden are our cryptonite. Czechia was earlier, but I`m pretty convinced we win a best-on-best against them. Canada should be favourite once again, but USA, Sweden and Finland can upset. Russia has good individuals, but they usually pley like individuals, so I`m actually not scared of them.

Finland and Canada have literally been the matchup in the gold medal game for the past 3 Mens World Championships now and Finland has won two of them while mostly using European pros instead of NHLers. Finnish NHLers are already accustomed to the run-n-gun NHL game and can also play a heavy game that completely smothers the attack of the opposing team. If Jalonen is the coach they can most definitely win the whole thing and will be more than a tough matchup for Canada or the US, even in a best v best format.

Thats true, but the other countries have also levelled the playing field. I personally cant wait to see Hellebuyck in a USA jersey (as a Team Canada fan that hurts my soul).

Russia is a real wild card if they play, the defense talent has gotten better but centre position might still be a problem next go around, the goaltending will be top notch. I think it comes to down to coaching with them, if they can get competent work there and commitment from the players around that then watch out!!

As a hockey fan for selfish reasons I want them to be there though I understand completely if they are not, still............those games against Finland and Sweden would be doozies of intensity I think, even more so then normal because of the circumstances. And of course Canada-Russia , well......................we all know about that.

I'll get hated on here for my view but, I hope we get to see it.

Russia has the best wingers and goalies

USA has the best defensemen

Canada has the best centers
Think Sweden may be just as good as the U.S at that position.

My view hasn't changed...

There are 5 nations that can win Gold. Canada and then Swede/Fin/US/Russia

Any of them winning a gold is not a shock or an upset...

Canada is a slight favorite. The next 4 are tied and all of them could win the gold and I wouldn't bat an eye.

It could really come down to goaltending. Russia has the most holes in their lineup but if Vas steals the show they could easily win.

Those goalies are so good I'm not even sure Vasi is the starter.

I like the contrasts of styles.. obvioulsy US and Canada (and Sweden) have strength everywhere. Then you get Finn's and SISU plus tactics plus 23 guys that are all beloved by their home teams. Russia with insane goalies and wingers.

Add in some high end skill from Germany and they will put a scare into some teams.

The clear advantage Canada has over other countries is center depth. It's just one stud after the other and if they want to can have certain centers play on the wng with seeming little drop off. A country like the U.S. doesn't have as much depth, but we can ice the likes of:

* Matthews
* Eichel
* Larkin
* Jack Hughes
* Zegras
* Tage Thompson
* J.T. Miller

Again, not as good as Canada but credible. Add in a quality goaltender like Hellebucyk, a strong defense, and an abudance of natural scoring wingers and it's a good team capable of winning gold.
