The nice thing for Canada is that they can move some of those C's to the wing. So, when the inevitable injuries happen... they can move a very good C from the wing back to C. It's a huge advantage. Also, late game draws and such when the 2 C's get kicked out. Canada could legit have 3 elite C's on the ice in the final minute of the game. Hell, might be a strategy to get their C and their opponents C 'kicked out of the draw!

That would be pretty funny against the Czechs.. final minute it's Krejci vs McDavid.. they both get kicked out.. now it's MacKinnon vs Hertl.. they get kicked out.. now it's Crosby vs Pastrnak.lol

Not that I'd expect the score to be close with 1 minute left.haha

Don't see any other thread more appropriate to post this:

Personally, I'd he happy if they cancelled it altogether and stuck to the Olympics. Even if it is fun trying to predict the rosters :)

Likely they want to include Russia and realize that won't be politically possible in 2024, so there hoping if they wait another year they can include Russia

Another year pushed out means another year passes without a World Cup which further compounds to this farce and joke of a tournament.

The NHL has certainly done a piss poor job trying to make this a thing. 8 years between the first and second one. 12 years after that for the third. And this future one will be at least 9 years after that. So in almost 30 years, the NHL would have held a whopping four World Cups. Yeah, way to build that brand.

Nuke this stupid idea once and for all since everyone knows there is nothing "world" about it, and is solely a money grab for the league that the last one in the end wasn't even worthwhile for the players (Team Canada players taking home a mere $75K each for being on the winning team).

Good god the NHL and the NHLPA are stupid. Never ceases to amaze. I assume that the reason is Russia but the NHL has earned 0 credibility or benefit of the doubt when it comes to dicking around with its tournament.

Yup. If you're gonna f* around with this tourney, just do us all a favor and don't organize it.

8 game summit series Canada v USA is the answer.

A warmup to the NHL/NHLPA World Cup 2025 that should happen sometime between 2058 and never.

Morons in NY.

Maybe they should just abandon the idea altogether and pursue a deal on the 2026 Olympics instead. I understand the cancellation of the 2024 tournament was mainly because of the Russia issue, but it is probable that there are other issues with the tournament as well. I am a bit skeptical about the 2025 version. From what I heard, most of the players would just prefer the Olympic participation, they are not super excited about the World Cup idea. The tournament's prestige suffered a lot in 2016, because of the meaningless gimmick teams and other things. I am afraid some players won't even take the tournament seriously, but rater as an exhibition event. Mainly for this reason, I would prefer the 2026 Olympics.

Somehow I slowly lose interest in ice hockey when I know that this Finnish generation will never see it play. That's an awkward feeling. It's time to distance yourself more and more from this sport.

If I was Finnish I would be going crazy at no best on best since 2014.

I'd be just as frustrated if I was Canadian and seeing McDavid flying around and never wearing a Canuck Jersey.

I'd be just as frustrated if I were American and have my best 'paper roster' in history and not get a chance to play.

It all sucks.... 2014 was the last real one. BRUTAL

Then I will probably follow football more in the long term. There's a lot wrong there, but it's still better and has a lot more meaning anyway. As a German-Finn, it's not that difficult for me. ;)

Finland hasn't yet lost a competitive match against Germany in this century (4 games played).

Watching fed cup for my fix!

I`m sure it would be a good tournament with only USA, Canada and Russia. As it stands even Finland and Sweden have as/more competative rosters than Russia

On paper Finland is clearly behind Russia. The only advantage is at center.

I'll discuss Finland.

The thing about Finland is that sure, they can upset great teams on any given day, we all know that. But can they upset 3-4 great teams to take home this level of championship? because that is what it really comes down to, Best on bests at the senior level in North America aren't the Skodas in a European rink, not even close.

They could possibly do it, but you have to wonder about their chances doing so. We know Finland is the best they have ever been, but world cup winning best in a Tournament in North America? Hmm...............it will be their toughest test. They came close in 2005 and on paper they will have a better team then in 2005, but they also flamed out at the last World Cup. I'd give them a 40% chance this time around,

Lot of pressure on them too, fans there expect a lot now, especially with media puffing up. They can't really go in thinking underdog story anymore, and with that comes a different type of feeling for the staff and players once games get underway, a new kind of mental situation.

We will see.
There's no such thing as a European rink anymore. IIHF went to small rinks this year. The Olympics were played in small rinks. Worlds were played in hybrid 29 meter wide rink because the old Helsinki Ice Hall can't fit a 26 meter wide rink due to old tech.

Jukka Jalonen didn't pull punches. He's doubtful there will be a World Cup in 2025 either.

"It doesn't simply go that if the war ended tomorrow, Russia would be back in sports immediately. And unfortunately it doesn't look it's ending soon."

He had a clear understanding why the delay:

"All European countries have the completely opposite stance as the NHL. Nobody wants Russia involved but the NHL does."

"I'm not going to go further into it, but everyone knows it. And it might be that World Cup will not be played for a while."

"As I've understood it, none of Finland, Sweden, Czechia or Switzerland want to play against Russia. That's very clear."

"You can't play a tournament, if the NHL wants a Russian team while everyone else says no."

I think extraliga is still big rinks...

I've always said I don't care which size.. but can we all not agree on the same size playing field?

So if it's going NHL size rinks.. fine with it as long as everyone plays on it. Is Liiga all NHL rinks now?

I didn't mean rink size when mentioning that I meant home crowd advantage, sorry for not being clear there.

Canada and the U.S are always the visiting team at the WHC no matter where in Europe the tournament is being held each year and with that comes perks/advantages for the european teams even if it is only in terms of fan support. We saw that just this past WHC.

It's a tougher road to slog for European teams at a best on best in N.A for a variety of reasons, they are now in enemy territory when playing here, no home comfort.

No question, it matters.

Really likely that Connor McDavid doesn't play in a best on best tournament until he is 28 years old. This last decade is an abject failure, the lack of foresight to see why having some semblance of an international best on best schedule is important is mind blowing.
Very true.

Plus, I had always been looking forward to McDavid and Crosby both playing on the same team while both were near their primes/peaks. Similar to Gretzky and Lemieux in 1987.

We will never get that though, since Crosby will be 37.5 years old by the time February 2025 comes.

It's brutal. I'd love to see all the nations best on beat rosters. Ftr... I doubt we see it in 2025 either.

Already recapped but 2018 was supposed to have NHLers... Did not. 2020 was supposed to be a world cup.. didn't happen. 2022 was supposed to have NHLers didn't happen. 2024 was supposed to be a world cup...not happening. 4 NHL best on bests cancelled in a row leaving us with that shitshow 2016 as out last taste and 2014 as the real one.
