I don't understand this sudden love for Gyokeres. He wasn't good enough for Brighton, and has only proven to be Championship level player until this hot streak for few months with Sporting.

Also Portuguese league isn't known to be hard to score in when playing for any of the big three clubs. And he is 25, I don't buy it that he has suddenly massively improved, even if I haven't watched many Sporting matches this season.

I hope Chelsea won't but him, certainly not for the release clause price.

Would he want to go there, though. There is a danger that he'd be the 4th choice when everybody (Rudifger, Militao, Alaba) is back healthy?

You could replace Gyokeres with Toney and Brighton with Newcastle and say the same thing. Not all players burst on scene and make their mark early. With that said though I don't think Gyokeres is the player they should be spending big on, might as well pay the fee for Toney who is premier league proven. Gyokeres I think can be good but more Solanke type of player, good for a mid club, than someone who's a top 6 quality striker.

I'd be mad if they spent more than 50m on Toney now, let alone if they had when only had .5 seasons of non-Championship football under his belt lol

PSG closing in on two of the top three Brazilian players in the shop window in Moscardo and Beraldo. Not quite as negligent as ignoring Enzo and Alvarez, but this is pretty close.

There is definitely something to be said about an evaluation method which results in paying over £400M for new midfielders only to sell your best midfielder who is homegrown for like £40M.

I will be done if Gallagher is sold for some random striker or some insanely overpriced striker. It's absolutely insane that this seems like a possible situation.

Sell Chalobah, Maatsen, and Broja if you really want to do something.

you have it backwards. They Have to sell the homegrown midfielder to balance FFP, in order to get new players. Chelsea obsession with signing new players is the only thing potentially forcing a move like this.

I thought Maatsen and Broja were “in the plans” too.

I don’t know why you guys are surprised. This turnover is like the most Chelsea thing ever - the bamboozling about a New Age of transfer tactics notwithstanding.

I think we'd like to keep Maatsen and Broja, but they are rotation players right now who may improve. Gallagher has played more minutes than anyone and is the player of the season so far, it's a different situation.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly and sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart were all in attendance at the club’s swanky annual Christmas lunch at the start of this month, when Conor Gallagher made an on-stage appearance.

Seated on a stool next to the club’s former youth product Jody Morris, Gallagher was asked by host Chris Hollins what the proudest moment of his career so far had been. Without a moment’s hesitation, the midfielder replied: “Captaining the team.”

The room erupted in applause and Gallagher’s name was sung by the spectators inside the Great Hall at Stamford Bridge, just as it was in the home stands on Tuesday night, when the England international wore the captain’s armband again and was Chelsea’s best player in the Carabao Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out victory over Newcastle United.

Ahead of kick-off, Gallagher had won possession in the final third more times than any other player in Europe’s top seven leagues and only three Premier League players have won possession more often in total. It was not hard to see why, as he flung himself around the Stamford Bridge pitch.
If Gallagher’s appearance and the reaction he received at the annual lunch was a reminder why Boehly, Winstanley and Stewart should think twice before using the 23-year-old as a Financial Fair Play get out of jail free card, then Tuesday night should have provided categoric proof that January bids must not be considered for him – however long is left on his contract.

Gallagher hit the Newcastle crossbar with a lovely curling shot and produced at least three crucial blocks in a performance typical of his energetic style. He kept his cool to score his penalty in the shoot-out.

Of Chelsea’s outfield players, only Axel Disasi had played more minutes this season, before the defender was replaced in the 78th minute, and yet head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to give any guarantees that Gallagher will not be sold – insisting it is a decision for the club and the player.

Gallagher will have 18 months remaining on his contract in the new year and Chelsea have been coy on his future, despite the player making it clear that his ambition is to stay at the place he calls home. Questions over whether bids in the next transfer window would even be considered have gone unanswered and speculation has been allowed to run wild.

In the plans is different from being arguably the highest performing player in the squad, that's the primary issue. If Gallagher was playing at the level he did last season, I'd be annoyed, but wouldn't care that much.

Selling Gallagher makes us weaker this season when we are in our most desperate state to improve.

Pretty sure that a current team of Chelsea academy reject would beat the current Chelsea team.

Rice, Livramento, Guehi, Tomori, Gilmour, Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham, Solanke, Ake, Christensen, Lamptey, Olise, Lewis Hall, Boga

Maybe adding Gallagher soon.

Who is missing?

Musiala. That team will still struggle to score, but would probably perform at the same level as the current squad.

Olise - Musiala - Mount behind Abraham/Solanke might score more goals than this version of Chelsea. Let's see how Nkunku does for them though.

This would be massive. We would finally, finally, see the last of Eric Dier getting into this team, ever.

So long Eric! Enjoy your remaining career in Portugal.

Ben Davies has impressed the hell out of me at CB. I expected nightmare fuel, but he's proven to be trustworthy.

If they have Porro/VDV/Romero/Todibo/Udogie/Davies/Emerson, that's a solid group of 7 defenders with many youngsters like Ashley Phillips on the come up and if Sessegnon EVER is healthy, he has the skill to thrive in Ange's system

This is such a key window for them.
