A few thoughts:
1 - I'm curious to see what Kakko and Wennberg look like. Kakko has been in no mans land since Chytil went down. He's either stuck on a third line that is limited offensively or he's forced to play with Mika and CK who are just not a fit for his style at all. Team was banking on him playing with Chytil and there's no skilled center depth after Mika and Tro. I pray they don;t trade Kakko right now as I think we just haven't given him a center that meshes well. No idea if Wennberg will work either but I'm pretty curious.
2 - If we're only talking about a rental here than I don't think we should go big. I go get Max Pac. And maybe I even add one more girth/grinder type. I just think we're gonna create offense in the playoffs from below the goal line and I want players that can win board battles and get inside the paint. Toffoli would be my strong preference but I don't see that happening at all.
FURTHERMORE -- adding major pieces at the deadline are very iffy plays. You need complimentary players. Guys who can fit in, not guys who change the way a whole line plays. This talk of getting someone that makes Mika go is so dangerous. You need a FIT. That's it. Just a fit. That's why guys like Vatrano or Buch are likely better bets for THIS YEAR than Guentzel. I only go after Guentzel if we're locking him up for 7-8 years after this season. IN that case, you could consider moving 1 of our prized wing prospects because Guentzel would be taking up a top 6 wing spot for a long time. But I think a big move for a guy like Guentzel is better in the off season. We simply don't know if he'll fit. He's been on Crosby's wing a long time. I'd be wary of adding him at the deadline hoping he'll mesh knowing the assets required to get him. Kane and Tarasenko NEVER meshed into the lineup fully and end of last year turned into a hot mess. I hope Drury has learned that lesson by now. I hope Dolan isn't, again, getting too invested in a player he knows nothing about.
3 - If we're bringing on a player with significant term (2 or more years on contract) then I could see us making a hockey trade. But most of the hockey trades are creating one hole to plug another. We are severely lacking depth and I doubt that kind of move makes sense at this point in the season.
