Johnny Duke: This type of stuff for 2 weeks: “All we have to go on is what guys like Bedard are reporting from camp. And with the history of drafting, you hafta wonder about this pick”

Maybe he didn’t use the word “bust” (I honestly don’t know….i wont say for sure that he did or didn’t use the word. Either way tge spirit of the message was clear). Are you saying this wasn’t his message?

That's exactly what I am saying. Everyone might have been critical about how the offense looked but most of the criticism was pointed at Van Pelt and personnel around Drake Maye. People were reporting the offense looked terrible. It was never a specific criticism of Drake Maye or a proclamation that he was a bust without ever playing a single game. Even Felger doesn't do that.

I think we’ll have to go to our graves disagreeing on this. There was certainly criticism of many different things but there was most certainly insinuation (better than proclamation?) tgat we missed on this pick. I heard what I heard….you heard it differently I guess…the earth will keep spinning.

I don't have much sympathy for Caleb Williams. By all accounts he was going into a much better situation than Drake Maye. Maye is developing despite the incompetence around him. Can't say I am sad to see Caleb Williams struggling either. Was never sold on him going back to college.
He's cocky, no doubt. But I don't mind that in a QB. I don't put this on Williams as much as I do the Bears organization. For all the whining Pats fans do about their OL, the Bears' OL is just as bad. Last night was about as awful as I've seen them. That rookie LT #72 had an absolute nightmare of a game. Every time they made a big play, he inevitably got called for something.

Its just a poorly coached team, desperately in need of a complete overhaul of the team culture. Mike Vrabel would be the perfect hire for them, but they'll inevitably screw that up and hire some glorified play-caller like Ben Johnson. He will fail in 3-4 years, just like Nagy did.

He would have been perfect here. Who would have thought bringing in a first time Head coach who hasn't even run one side of the ball would be lost running the whole show?

Mayo is getting worse and not showing any signs he can do this..Krafty Bob screwed this up big time.

The trouble with Mayo is the idea of him is much better than the reality.

Young, former player who should be able to connect well with players of today. Had 8 years as a player, including a Super Bowl win, and 5 years as a coach under Belichick, so presumably learned about what it takes to win in this league. Spent some time working in media, so should understand those interactions.

I don't know if it's actually a case of inexperience being a key problem. I think it's personality. I think of Josh McDaniels' two head coaching disasters, and how he made it seem after the first failure that he had learned about how he needed to change to make his second chance a success. But then he basically made the exact same mistakes, and it's because it's so difficult to change your personality.

With Mayo, he's incredibly driven. He'd been after this job for years, so his post-playing career has been all about self-promotion. That leads to where we are today, which is someone who's so focused on making himself look good, he'll throw anyone under the bus to deflect blame. And when he receives negative attention for that, he walks back the comments, but that also just makes him look bad. He got the job through questionable means, so he's always going to be concerned about holding onto that power because he didn't get it through true merit.

The issue is not this one comment, the issue is how many times this year has Mayo said something that he then backtracked or clarified?

And do you honestly think the head coach passive aggressively blaming a coordinator is not a bad look? He's in charge, not Van Pelt.

But if they were 7-8, or if the team were improving instead of getting worse, his press conference faux pas wouldn't matter. They stand out because the team looks like garbage going into Week 15.

I’m all got firing Mayo and bringing in an unbelievable coach we will all love and thinks awesome

who we got that will come here ? Gotta figure will want the brinks as Ty Law said today and power

My concern is what happens if he makes a bad play call or they lose a game ?

Ben Johnson seems like he could go 19-0 but does he want to come here

He calls plays right ?

What is Mayo bringing to the table that anyone thinks/thought he can turn around this organization?

I didn't like the hire, but liked the player and figured we need to give him some time, but they look worse now.

Even the Kraft's look like they know they got it wrong. I wonder what Jonathan was writing in that notebook?

Coming off a bye and looking like lazy, flat garbage isn't a good look.

They should have cleaned house...

Objectively they're better off tanking at this point for the draft position so in-game management in week 15 isn't going to be the make-or-break on Mayo's coaching aptitude for me.

I still think he's not ready either in coaching or media savvy for the role and that they should've gone with Vrabel.

Well that's the other thing to consider. They've gotten worse over time. With most teams you see progress, but this year it's all regression. Especially on defense. They've gotten worse every week despite Mayo being a defensive minded coach. That's a really damning thing to say too

We need to find someone who will make all the right calls and say all the right things

There has to be a lot of coaches floating around who would love to be here

Just no negative plays

Bonus looks like AVP developed Maye

Greg Bedard or Ben Volin would be my choice but not sure they could handle media criticism

All teams have injuries and some are still winning.

Trade maye for first rd pick he's 1-8 as a starter this year Jacoby won the jets game for them or that would've been another loss get a real mobile QB and top wide out with the 2 picks

The two biggest impacts you mentioned happened BEFORE the season. Judon wasn't coming back, obviously. He wanted to get paid so he forced his way out. Barmore is also back now, no? Bentley sucks. Duggar? Also sucks. Peppers missed a couple of weeks but is back now, no? How has Gonzalez looked to you this season? Like a game changer or JAG?

They've gotten worse from last season, and the longer this season has gone on. Mayo is in way over his head. Kraft f***ed up by promising him the job when he clearly doesn't have the goods. Way too much passing the buck and passive aggressively blaming others when he's the head coach. It's a bad look. Its not what leaders do.

So what happens next year when new OC runs his back averaging 5 yards a carry in game on fourth and one ? Does he get fired ?

Maybe Kraft can have Jonathan make calls and save paying OC only to fire after one season
