The insistence on amateurism is a little pompous. No one's really an amateur anyway with training and sponsorship. And for the amount that all these athletes have to uproot their lives and spend years training, they ought to be compensated somehow.

Plus, in the competitive team sports like basketball, it's the only place we have legitimate best on best. Would you rather see a bunch of amateur college kids or watch a Dream Team?

However, I do like how FIFA sends U-23 teams to the Olympics because senior teams already have a best on best World Cup, so it gives something unique to the olympic tournament. I guess each discipline's governing body can determine what's best for competition.

My oldest daughter and I are obsessed with Pedro's. When the kids were young we drove to Florida a bunch of times and always got a kick out of the billboards. Now we drive to Hilton Head every couple of years and do the same.

The best part is, we've never stopped and never will. I'm sure it is terrible and it would be a huge letdown if we actually visited.

We went to Myrtle Beach for vacation every year, growing up. My brother and I were obsessed with the billboards and yes we yelled lol. Well, not actually yelled, but asked if we could stop. My dad always said no, because it was just a tourist trap.

Then one year he surprised us and stopped, just to prove his point.

He was right. It was bad.

I mean, bad.

Their budget must have been 95% marketing, 3% payroll, and 2% literally everything else.

The IOC is as arrogant as they come but yet they are a paradox.

They leave BILLIONS on the table as they forbid advertising at the venues including virtual digital ads.

The ONLY corporate ads you see at venues are for Omega timekeeping and Panasonic for the video boards as both have long-term contracts with the IOC. Compare that to FIFA.

Paris doesn't even sell beer at the venues

Been enjoying a long breakfast with other Olympics cam ops from several countries.

Somebody raised the question of what was your most memorable shot. It became my turn and I said 'I am embarrassed to say this but it was Tonya's skatelace breaking' and everybody laughed.

Tonya and Nancy invented reality television. OJ would follow a few months later.

The long term aftermath was NBC made sure they locked up Olympic rights in the US after the CBS deal expired in 1998.

I don't mind the lack of advertising. Nice to have one space left in sport that is largely free of overt commercialism, even though there is plenty in the background. I could live with some more ads if I thought a good chunk of the money would go to the athletes, but we all know that'd be unlikely.

But geez refusing to sell beer - even in France that's a crime!

@Aussie Bruin Lack of beer sales was a Paris organizing committee decision.

Meanwhile, we NBC smurfs (who have been treated well) are rolling our eyes over Snoop Dog being paid $8 million plus expenses.

Give me the best "amateur" athletes competing in the olympics any day over a bunch of spoiled millionaire pro's that scream for attention.

being 63 I just can't get into it, its not the same and frankly its just another sporting money maker event now.

Snoop getting paid 8m to be a clown says it all.

The absurdity of 8 million and then adding "plus expenses" lol

Can't spring for that Big Mac on 8 million I guess

I stop every time and I always will. It’s exactly what you expect it is, but there’s a gorilla statue that I have to take a photo with any time I drive by. Family gag. Years ago on a vacation to Disney we stopped to use restrooms, and my youngest brother was climbing the gorilla. He was holding a pose like he was doing the olympic rings and begging my mother to take a photo. My mother is a notoriously slow photo taker. “Ok smile!” And 30 seconds later she clicks. So the photo that was taken of that moment is my brother sagging off the gorilla with a grimace on his face instead of a proud smile.

Here’s one of mine from May 2019, i know i have at least 2 since this somewhere

Well just add that to the list of reasons why I would never be a synchronized swimmer

Besides, you know, not actually being able to swim. Or able to synchronize with anything.
I can swim and I don't mind a swim cap but gelatin in my hair? That's a hard pass.

I am with you on synchronizing. It is not a skill I posess.
