Good discussion, but I bet Whitlock starts in the top end of the rotation and they stay status quo.
They need to keep him in the bullpen. Great reliever, average starter who doesn't seem to be able to handle a starters workload. Trying to get value out of extension is going to ruin Whitlock.

I wouldn't completely discount the idea of Breslow/Bailey unlocking something in Whitlock that would make him an effective starter.

Same goes for Houck and Winckowski.

Spotrac has the Sox roughly $50 million under the threshold.

Until it happens, I can't imagine they'll start the season with a payroll that low.
They can get Montgomery, Hernandez, and trade prospects/Duran? for a pitcher

Thank you Tom Werner for full throttle comment

This is something I don't like. Jansen's proven he's a good closer for the Red Sox and now they want to offload him when the team is thin in the bullpen? Why?
I like Jensen - unless he wants to make Whitlock or Houck closer knowing Kenley a short term

To subtract Sale & Jansen they would have to be bringing in a starter

Globe today on Grissom

He made history in his first big league game.
Not only did he hit a home run, he stole a base.
He singled in the ninth inning and promptly stole second. Grissom made history by doing so, becoming the youngest player in major league history to hit a ball out of the park and record a steal in their debut.
The then-No. 1 ranked prospect in the Braves’ minor league system was the 11th player to accomplish the feat

Just when I was starting to get a little excited after the Sale trade, I get a good reminder that the owners are cheap f***s.

Also this is 100% Boras leaking this stuff, this is what he does lol.

To quote Nick Cattles...

SELL THE TEAM!

Milliken reaffirms what Cotillo has reported.

Really wouldn’t put any stock into those reports, probably just agents trying to pit the fanbase against the org to make the org panic spend. They know what the atmosphere is around here.

If they end up well below the threshold then I’ll believe them but until then I don’t think anybody knows what’s going on

Good on Boras. He should be calling the Red Sox out on the carpet for skimping on paying players what they're worth. This is a big market ball club pretending to be a mid market/small market ball club.

It's textbook Boras lol, still makes me angry even though I know it's him stirring the pot though.

Thinking about it logically, it probably means they move Kenley right? Move Martin to closer, move Houck and Whitlock to the Pen full time. Sign one starter with the money you're freeing up, trade for another.

How many top end talented players need to come off the board until you are willing to hit the panic button and say that ownership aren't doing what it takes to win? I seriously want to know this because the Red Sox front office haven't tried to fight these rumors at all.

Yeah if they really are serious about trimming more salary before making another add Jansen is probably the obvious choice to move. Can just slide Martin into that role and use that $16 mill elsewhere

I like the Sale deal regardless of what Grissom becomes. Sale and his money being going is addition by subtraction. Atlanta is championship driven, so taking the risk on him is worth it for them.

Grissom has a chance to be something of value. Not really sure what it will be, but at least a super utility type.

Can't speak for everyone, but I'm not going to "hit the panic button" at least until pitchers and catchers report.

What "panic button"? The writing's been on the wall for some time now, that they are not going all out. The 225 mark is much more likely than >250. Still lots of millions shy and they may even trade Jansen.

The problem is that most of the fanbase won't turn on Henry and the FSG, because they talk themselves into the team being competitive and how it's not necessary to shoot past the LTS when you are not on a level with the Dodgers, Yankees and the other AL east teams.
