Frank was signed as a proven 8-year, NHL vet. He blossomed with his 2nd team, Florida, after cutting his teeth for three years with Boston. Therein lies the difference.

The shortest forward that GM Verbeek has drafted in his past two drafts is 6'0 RW Sidorov.

I actually like 5'11 and 181 lbs, right shooting, centerman Helenius a lot because he is playing against men in Liiga and producing very well, 9g + 19 pts = 28 points in 38 games. He is 6th in team scoring, despite playing fewer games due to his participation with the WJC-20 team.

To put his game play into perspective, there's another Finnish forward I like later in the first round in RW Emil Hemming. He is an EP reported 6'2 and 194 lbs (could be 6'0.75" in height) also playing in Liiga. In 33 Liiga games, Emil has scored 7g + 3a = 10 points.

Both Finns are 17 year olds, but Helenius is far more advanced in his game against men than Hemming. Yet both struggled to light up at the WJC-20. Could be a certain pecking order... I have no idea. Plus side is both will still be 17 years old when the WJC-18 comes around before the draft.

It is possible that Helenius might grow an inch to make him 6'0. That's what happened to our own Jacob Perreault (from 5'11 to 6') and Brayden Tracey (from 6' to 6'1). (Source for Perreault and Tracey: Gulls current roster.)

Also, there are two, short centermen who were recently drafted that look promising in the NHL in 2021 seventh overall pick Eklund with SJ and 2022 third overall pick Cooley in Arizona.

With all that said, I'm hoping that we're in a position to draft RD Levshunov instead of a forward.
and Finns play bigger than their height. Sami Vatanen for example.
Even 6'0 Selanne had 2 career fights in his NHL career lol.

You mean like Frank Vatrano?

Maybe it is more about the way they play and not so much about inches.
PV has been the GM for the last two drafts and I don't believe he has taken a single player under 6'. Someday he will but I really doubt he will use a top 4-5 pick in this draft for a sub 6' player.

Unless it's clear BPA (Celebrini), this first rounder probably won't be it. There are just too many guys that fit the mold of player he likes and are ranked right with the smaller guys. Ducks scouts do project D better, so we might pick up one of those big D that are left at 5. I wonder if they gamble on Silayev IF they really view him as a Hedman level D (which I think some scouts have said).

A lot could change with the deadline too. If Rags are interested in Henrique/Vatrano and not giving up a 1st, if we get Kakko and if they view him as having untapped offensive potential, that could solidify picking a high end D if they view them as similar to a forward.

Completed the first mock of the season. Traded up from 35 to get back into the first round.

1-4 - LD Anton Silayev
1-27 - RC Dean Letourneau
Dean Letourneau at eliteprospects.com
3-66 - G Pavel Moysevich
3-68 - LW Logan Sawyer
3-80 - LC Linus Eriksson
4-100 - LC Svante Sjodin
5-132 - RW Tyler Thorpe
6- 164 - LD Luke Ashton
7- 196 - LC Daniil Anatsky
I would have liked to see Elick or Emery with the late 1st. Actually really surprised they both went last 1st and not available at what would have been our 2nd.

So many guys in the mid 1st that would be great to trade up for.

Marek Vanacker has been solid this year. Might be someone worth taking a shot on with one of the picks anaheim gets at the deadline

levshunov has been the guy I’ve wanted since start. I think he’s in the jiricek/nemec/Mintyukov tier
You may get your wish. To me there is a top 5 that includes Celebrini, Leshunov, Dickinson, Silayev, and Lindstrom. The Ducks should get one of them with a top 5 pick. I don't think Eiserman or Demidov are PV style picks so I don't see the Ducks going after either of them.

Yakemchuk is a player to keep an eye on. Shows lots of potential with some of his moves but can have some decision making issues. I put down those issues to a player growing and experimenting with what they can pull off.

Check out these highlights.

Do you actually like any prospects? Or are you expecting them all to be perfect or something?
I love Demidov and Buium. Lindstrom will be a second line center and a fan favorite. Helenius will be a good second line forward.

Would you like me to keep going?

This is a very flawed draft after Celebrini. Levshunov is far from a finished product but what makes him intriguing (in addition to his skill and size) is how he has quickly he has elevated his play at each level over the past couple of years. He's gone from playing junior hockey in Belarus two years ago to the NCAA this year and has improved greatly along the way. His trajectory is outstanding. There is a reason why he is ranked so highly.

With respect to the players you mentioned, Demidov is a highlight and point machine but keep in mind that (1) he is an 05 (2) he is playing in the equivalent of the OHL (3) he's been putting up big points against some of the weaker teams in the MHL (4) the Russian factor, and (5) he isn't a big player. All that makes him a boom/bust type of pick and will likely see him fall on draft day. I don't think he is a PV player at all. Buium is talented but once again small (for a D) and there is some question as to how his offense will translate to the NHL. Again, not a PV type pick IMO. Lindstrom is going to be a very high pick and I wouldn't have any problem if the Ducks picked him. Helenius probably does slot in as a 2C but he isn't dynamic and his size is less than ideal for the NHL. The Ducks certainly don't need another 2C prospect...especially one under 6'.

He asked if I like any prospects, not who I think the Ducks will pick.

Buium should be a top 3 pick, he’s that good in all three zones. I would pick him 2nd overall.

Right now I have Lindstrom ranked 5th.

Terik Parascak might be the steal of the draft.

I will be very disappointed if the Ducks draft Eiserman, Levshunov, or Dickinson.

Appreciate your response. Bold take on Buium. I like him but I would like him a whole lot more if he were 6'2" instead of 6'0".

What don’t you like about levshunov…. I still like Eiserman, but not where we’re picking.

Celebrini, levshunov are my top 2 and if both are off the board I’d consider exploring options to drop down a little and get yakemchuk.

I think levshunov is pretty raw at this point, which makes him even more impressive. I think he’s on that Minyukov level of prospect, he’s built great, and physically strong.

this is the year where we kind of need to get lucky and win the lottery.

Celibrini is the best player by a country mile in this draft right now.

Frankly, the ducks are in the same position they’re in now next year if they don’t get him. No one else is stepping into a top 6/top 4 role in October

I would say Celibrini is slightly ahead of Carlsson/Fantilli as a prospect

Disagree personally. I think this is the last time the Ducks are in the top 5 pick position before the lottery.

They likely would have been closer to 10 if they just had better injury luck.
I know it's easy to forget but Zegras is just 22. We could see a huge step next year.

I agree that winning the lottery this year would be crazy for the Ducks future.

I like Buium more than the other defensemen as well, just so smart and poised... if he was actually 6' 2", like some pages show he'd be the obvious #2 in this draft.
