If we're 2nd or 3rd overall (and for argument sake all of these guys on are board) which defensemen do you take:

Dickinson, Levshunov, Silayev, or Yakemchuk
I do think you take a defenseman and I have no freaking idea which one of these four I would take. They all have their pros and cons. As I said earlier in this thread, my "gun to my head" guess at Grier's ordering is Dickinson, Yakemchuk, Levshunov, Silayev. Could easily see flipping Lev and Yak, or even a total mix up of all four. If Silayev were more on the Demidov contract train maybe he's above Levshunov. Maybe Grier values RD more than we know and it's between Yak and Lev.

Better question about that draft is whether, in light of Sam Reinhart's current season, you would go back and accept the Sabres offer of 14th overall + Reinhart for the Eklund pick.

It's genuinely too soon for me to call. CHL / NCAA playoffs soon + World U18s late April / early May will determine a lot.

I feel like that's when the microscope really starts to come out and the meaningful discourse ramps up.

I think if I were on the spot and I couldn't take Demidov, I might coward out and go the Dickinson route, and then Levshunov or Buium or Parekh.

Really praying that we can get #1 so that this draft can be watched stress free. It's so wide open that it'll make for a super fun viewing experience.

If you somehow could get him out of Russia in less than 3 yrs, I’m going Silayev. Since that’s such a presumably long time line, I’d be safe and take Levshunov. For a “safe pick”, Levshunov would have a huge impact on the future of this franchise imo..Muk and either Silayev or Levshunov would be an opposing coaches worst nightmare.

I agree, this draft will probably one of those were you kinda see what organizations value from prospects or just need in like picks 2-16. Outside Celebrini, it's still so wide open.

Also would agree that guaranteed Celebrini would go long ways for Sharks fans to have a very fun night and hopefully there is that PIT pick to kinda see if MG is valuing prospects based on need (defence), BPA or something in between.

Was just going to post this. He's gotten better and better at reading the tea leaves at how NHL clubs are ranking the players.

For the full tiers as far as they matter for us:
Celebrini
All star potential: Silayev, Dickinson, Yakemchuk, Levshunov
Bubble all star: Catton, Demidov, Lindstrom
Top of lineup: Parekh, Buium, Helenius, Jiricek, Eiserman
Bubble top/middle lineup: Chernyshov, Sennecke, Iginla, MBN

Next tier starts with Greentree.

This feels somewhat validating, as I've seen Dickinson and Yakemchuk as more solid than the other Ds as likely top picks, but it's just one ranking, still 3 months to go, and who knows what happens on draft day.

If we pick any of those top D, they'll immediately be our second best prospect behind Smith. If anyone from the bubble tier falls to PIT pick and we get that pick, or if we get Jiricek, it'll be amazing because that player will also become one of our very best top 3 prospects immediately.
What's interesting is that Pronman also had these tiers for his 2023 picks. So to compare these with his 2023 pre-draft rankings:

Tier 1 (Bubble Generational player and elite NHL player): Bedard -
Tier 2 (Elite NHL player): Fantilli, Michkov - Celebrini.
Tier 3 (NHL All-Star): Carlsson, SMITH - Silayev, Dickinson, Yakemchuk, Levshunov
Tier 4 (Bubble All star): - Catton, Demidov, Lindstrom
Tier 5 (Top of the line up player): Reinbacher, Danielson, Dvorsky, But, Simashev - Parekh, Buium, Helenius, Jiricek, Eiserman
Tier 6 (Bubble top/middle of the lineup:): Leonard, Perreault, Honzek, Wood, Willander, Yager, Benson, EDSTROM, Moore, Barlow - Chernyshov, Sennecke, Iginla, Brandsegg-Nygard
Tier 7 (Middle of the line up player): MUSTY, ... range 21-38 - Greentree, ... range 18-34.

So if we draft according to this list, we will get at least a player at Smith's level.
If we get the PITs pick, we'd get a player that'd be at least considered in the top 10 of last year (top of the line up player).

Looking at his January 2024 update of his pre-draft 2023 player rankings, he adjusted tiers for some:
  • Michkov, Smith, Danielson, Dvorsky, But, Yager, Barlow down a tier.
  • Leonard, Perreault, Sandin-Pelikka, Rehkopf up a tier.

If we miss out on Celebrini but get #2 I’m thinking we go with Lindstrom. He’s 6’5”, fast, shoots first, and is mean. We lack those attributes as a group as far as prospects go and it’s just such a unique skillset. Could be our version of a shoot first Getzlaf type. Eklund and Smith are small, not super fast playmakers and we are building around them as of now.

If not him I would probably go Dickinson but I’d rather use the Pens 1st to get a defenseman. And our next years 1st

Yep, also more data to validate the brewing narrative that GMMG is going full '07 Ducks, or if the Bystedt, Halttunen, Musty etc picks happened to be size monsters and conveniently BPA simultaneously.
It’s not just the draft picks. All the prospects he’s traded for (Muk, Thrun, Edstrom, Thompson) are all pretty big. At least he’s mixed in picks like Havelid to show he’s not afraid to draft smaller, skilled players. Just a personal preference, but if we miss out on Celebrini, I hope we take Demidov if he interviews well. I think one of the things missing from the prospect pool is an elite skater. I’ve heard Demidov fits the bill, as does Dickinson I think.

Yeah, Havelid, Cagnoni — they’ve actually had a fairly diverse pool.

I genuinely have no idea who I want if we don’t get Celebrini. Demidov is exciting but that’s a lot of small, skill guys in the system. I err on the side of defense because we’re just entirely barren there other than Muhk and I guess Havelid and Cagnoni but they’re risks. We need a blue chip defenseman.
