I think those rankings are from before the season started. EP ranked him 4th in their latest rankings a few days ago and I think Pronman had him 10th last week.
His big issue is the lack of IQ. He'll be drafted near the top-10 just like Geekie in 22, or Danielson in 23, but I'd have him ranked below both of those 2. Seems like someone who will get drafted high because he's a big centre scoring in junior. If you read around though, his comparable are Nicholas Roy, Lawson Crouse, etc. I'd take him ~20.

Anyone know much about this kid? 6'5" 200 pound center with 14 goals and 25 points in 18 WHL games so far. I wonder if he's just another Conor Geekie or something special.
I actually like him. I hated Geekie for the record. He’s got better skating than Geekie. I think he’s still a bit of a project and while he uses his size well for juniors it’s not good enough for the NHL level right now. He could be a good option around 15-20 (where I expect PIT’s pick to land) if we don’t take Celebrini.

One guy I’m very interested in with PIT’s 1st is Trevor Connelly. Very skilled, very smart, good skating, needs to put on some weight. Good two way play.

My knock on him is actually about character. He had a couple incidents involving racism. One was an alleged racial slur during a game which he denied and ended up having his suspension cut early and it wiped from his record so not as worried about that one. The other is a picture he posted on socials. He deleted it very quickly and has apologized profusely about it and claims to have done some sort of education around the issue. One of those that you wish you could talk to him to see what’s true and what’s not. If he’s really learned, man he’s going to be a good NHLer. If not, man he’s a ticking time bomb.

Would rather not then.

Straight up Do Not Draft. I wouldn't want him if he turned into McDavid.

If he’s done the rehab and actually learned then why not? There is a world where he genuinely didn’t know. He didn’t grow up in the most culturally diverse area and as someone who grew up in a not culturally diverse area, you definitely can just not know. Granted you should probably learn and it’s not an excuse at all but if you’ve actually learned, why not?

Even as a dumb wanna be edge lord kid, I never accidently did multiple racist things
It doesn’t sound like there was multiple. The first was completely taken off of his record and the suspension was overturned. I just felt like it should be mentioned as well.

Again don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone his actions at all. I would absolutely be asking him multiple questions about it in the interview. I like his play on the ice a lot though. So I’d ask him about it, I’d ask people around him about it, hell I’d talk to the player that claimed there was a racial slur in the game even though he was cleared of it.

After the whole Merkley fiasco I don't want to draft guys with any sort of character concerns with a high pick. If they are a first round pick they should be a high character hard worker without those sorts of concerns.

I mean Merkley’s concerns were that he thought everyone was the problem but himself. He was the same player we drafted as when we traded him.

Connelly is said to be a very hard worker and it shows on the ice. He’s also very involved in the community (at least from what I’ve seen).

There are plenty of other fish in the sea.

Question for you guys: if we finish last (we will) but don’t win the lottery - who do you want us to pick 2nd or 3rd and is it soul crushingly depressing to miss out on Celebrini or is 2nd/3rd very close to him in skill?

Eiserman seems like a stud scoring winger. He would pair nicely with a high-end playmaker like Will Smith. The tank then continues in 2025 when both Misa and Hagens should go 1-2 and are both centers from what I understand?

2nd is easy with Eiserman, if its 3rd/4th gets a little more tough. Id probably take Levshunov 3rd or 4th

Eiserman is a very good 2nd choice. Past that there’s some good dman. I don’t see it with Levshunov but people like him. Catton is another name. Demidov showed a lot of potential before getting injured. Dickinson another guy I really like.

Only two of those guys are D though

The three D in tier 2/3 are Levshunov, Dickinson, possibly Silayev. There are others.

Demidov is Michkov lite, and is in the top 5 discussion.

In the 55% chance that we pick 3rd when we likely finish last, I would hope we go with one of the top D's, but as of now Macklin is clear tier 1 (playing at a fantilli level as a young freshman in NCAA) and Eiserman seems to be seen as a clear tier 2 on his own as a Rantanen/Ovie- style pure sniper. So picking 3rd isn't as great as it was last year for obvious reasons.

We all know we're picking 3rd :-(. Sharks are cursed

Got it, so Macklin would give us our 1C but if we don’t get him we likely get our super star scoring winger with the 2nd pick. And 3rd… it certainly seems it’s Demidov (who I love everything I’ve read about) or a Dman. It seems sort of urgent for us to find our D of the future in ASAP. I’d take best overall with our first but probably try and take as many swings at D as possible with the other picks.

I have a bad feeling about Demidov... But there's a ton of time until the draft. I think we'll end up taking a D. We'll see what happens at 3rd.

What’s your bad feeling? I know he’s had a lot of bad luck this year and also plays for a very poorly run team.
Both of those things (the injury), two more seasons for SKA with horrific young player development, very small forward / wing and we already have too many of those in the pipeline... He's like Michkov but even more undersized and no loan to a team that will actually play him, and probably not as good as Michkov.

everyone heres ignoring the obvious pick with the pittsburgh pick: Tij Iginla, who is yes Jarome's son.

One of the youngest players in the draft, 6'0 according to EP. Played his prep school in boston, has NHL roots.

Seems like an MG fever dream.

But id actually like the pick, hes ranked in the mid teens as of now.
