I think you may be overvaluing the quality of our system. If we are drafting 10th then Buium would be a ‘steal’. Unfortunately, he won’t fall that far. He stands an excellent chance of being the second defenceman taken. Some see him being the first.
We'll see. Buium :

Lapointe was seen at Plymouth after the Monahan trade (possibly to scout the NTDP ?). He's a few tidbits (via google translate) :
CH : Un dard de plus pour Lapointe et son équipe | LNH.com
“There aren’t 15 guys like Celebrini in this draft,” Lapointe analyzed. I can count maybe five guys who could be called elite. […] The crop is not that deep after the first round, in my opinion, but there will still be good players in the second round.“
The fact that there are a lot of defenders will perhaps cause some attackers to slide further than expected. We will see. The year is not over and there are always guys who come out a little later in the season. That’s why we work all year round and see over 200 matches. »
The recruiting team held a mid-season meeting and established a more precise plan for the future, which will eventually allow them to draw up the final list.“We made a list of players we want to target and see play more in the second half,” he explained. We will then identify which ones we would like to have, and it will be up to Kent to decide what he does with that. »

Won't be surprised if the top 3 picks all end up being forwards
1. Celebrini
2. Lindstrom
3. Demidov
I would agree, but for the Putin factor. If the ranking was based on talent alone, this is dead on. But drafting 3 OA , some (most) teams may not be willing to assume the risk of taking a player whose availability is questionable. Particularly when there is so much other talent available. Demidov will go high, but I question whether he will go as high as 3 OA. Now if it was me .....

Been proven over and over, go with best player available. Drafting for need is dangerous

Don't see how Lindstrom would be over Demidov for talent.

The only reason Demidov would go 3OV is that Russian factor, but I don't see how he leaves the top 3 either since he's a more important 2-way player than Michkov and certainly the most complete winger of this draft.

If Catton goes top 3 (that's also possible) it will be because scouts think he's the most credible center in that 2nd group and they see Lindstrom less in the center for the NHL. Unlikely but possible.

Lindstrom probably offers the best combination of speed, skill and size in the draft. As for Demidov, he is everything that Michkov isn’t. If Demidov played in the CHL he would be challenging Celibrini for 1OA. But he doesn’t. And for that factor alone, he will drop to 3OA or even lower. The pressure on General Managers to secure instant gratification for their team’s fan base is sometimes irresistible.

I don't think the question is as easy as skill vs position. So many other factors, styles, characters etc..

Don't even need to read between the lines that they are targeting a forward
After going through all the shit we had to go through by NOT taking a F last year and unbelievably taking the D to everyone's surprise
And all that shit about 'missing out on michkov' we had to endure afterwards

It is absolutely mind-blowing some people are actually considering D with our top10 pick..

I can't understand how the incessant cries for more offense won't be even worse if we take another D, and this time they'd actually be right to freak out about it

There's not a doubt in my mind they draft a Forward with this pick, not a single one

so true

why take a D man when they can score now.
KH has to take the #1 forward on the board that is sitting there.

I would say it all depends on who is available. For all we know, the top 4-5 forwards are gone by the time the Habs pick. Pick the BPA, and then you can try and complete a Romanov->Dach move again. I wouldn’t pigeonhole myself because I’m dead set on getting a forward.

When you draft for need, you end up getting guys like Kotkaniemi and Galchenyuk. When you draft the BPA, you get guys like Guhle and Sergachev.

I wouldn’t dismiss picking a defender. It would be met with an additional move for a more established player.

For instance, you can say we need a Catton more than a Dickinson, but I am 100% certain someone like Dickinson will always have far more value on the market than someone like Catton. If you want an example of Habs players that are more established, Guhle has a lot more value than Newhook despite them being fairly similar in age.
