I could buy that but I wouldn't do Perfetti for Cozens. I'm not that sold on Cozens. And I wouldn't have done Perfetti for any of the old Cs who were being touted either.

Having failed to get the 2C we need, I was disappointed that we didn't do more to upgrade our D. Schenn may be a small improvement to our PK. I think he will be a liability otherwise and paired with the other liability on the 3rd pair could be a disaster.

Yeah only thing I move Perfetti for is if we have a signed Rantanen coming our way.

Yeah I'd like to bring him in as a depth add if his fitness is up to snuff. But the good news is we can do one of those incentive deals for a player his age.

At the very least a camp try out should be offered and if he shows he can still play then make him an offer.

Yager seems on track to actually be developed as a centre which would make him the first home-grown C in a long time now.

Could they have had more patience with Cole as he went through the ups and downs of growing into a C in the league?

Maybe, but the Jets seem to have a very clear template for the role, and Perfetti ain’t it.

It sounds like they went hard after Nelson. I’m not sorry they missed, given the final price.

We will never know, I suppose.

The reality is it was likely taking a + to Yager anyways as Ritchie would be held in higher regard prospect wise. That's where things are just flat out looney and I'm sure Chevy hung up the phone.

The Isles were steadfast it seemed from not taking an offer built up with more picks and/or prospects. They wanted the biggest chip possible, and to their credit, they got it.

In the end, I'm very happy looking at Yager and Salo in the Jets' system on March 10th and avoiding that deal.
Agree 100%. The cost for Nelson was just too high in the seller market we saw with the TDL. In other years with more available centers maybe prices are more reasonable, but this season the player available just wasn't worth the cost IMO.

Why do you think Schenn will be liability? Morrissey was very complimentary of him as a player. Schenn also has very decent 3rd pairing underlying numbers, over 1000 NHL games and 2 cups. He is also a 230 lbs bull, and we need one of those that is better at hockey than Stanley.

IF, big IF, Jonathan Toews decides to play again, can he be signed and play in the playoffs this year? Similar to a US college prospect signed after his season is over?

I've heard the reports he's planning a return next season, but he's skating in Arizona and if he's feeling good, could that still be an option this season?

That's a fair point. The wording in the Athletic definitely reads as you state.

"If you have a no-trade list, what's the first team on it?

It also states, "111 players were polled on a range of topics."

So this wasn't a poll strictly of players with NTC's or NTM's. The majority of them would be players under 27 without 7 seasons. The would represent just 12.9% of the players who played this year. As a result the entire poll is garbage because it's not at all reflective of players that even have that clause in their contract.

If 12.9% of the entire league were polled then the likelihood of any of these players actually having a NMC or NTC would be a fraction of that. To get specific 17% of players have contracts which specify teams they refuse to go to. (.13*.17=0.0221). So of the players polled 2.21% would have actually had a NMC in place.

Until there's a poll that includes the entire list of players with NMC's, the math regarding what fraction of players have Winnipeg on their list remains purely speculative, but as the math suggests that this affects the Jets in a very small way.

No he can't play in the playoffs.

Stastny would have stayed but jets offered a two year deal and Vegas offered three years. As it turned out jets traded for him again for that third year so they should have signed him in the first place.
You don't post for a couple of months and then you come back and post all of this negative shit. Are you sure you are a Jets fan and not a Vegas fan?

Would Tavares or Toews be a better fit on the Jets? Toews would be more popular with the fanbase and probably not cost too much, but Tavares is more of a guarantee to put up points.

Would Tavares want to come to Jets? On that basis alone Toews would be a better fit. Not only is he still a bit of a homer, there’s mutual interest with the Jets and the Chevy connection

Actually I’m both! Jets fan first and foremost. Then Vegas and Pens together. I don’t think I’m being negative. It’s a fair point to say chevy has had years to figure out 2C and hasn’t done it.

We’re all excited for the jets being in first or second place but they had a great regular season last year too. They need to prove it in the playoffs. I hope they do. But it doesn’t absolve chevy of the responsibility to improve the jets C and D.

That help will likely need to come internally. It's no secret that Winnipeg is not Vegas. Players will never be lining up in FA to sign with us, most players have us on their no trade lists and the few that don't usually aren't the premier players of the league. We have even had some trouble retaining our drafted players at times. The list of available C's and D's are usually quite limited, most of them are short term rental fixes. We have certainly tried though. We have given up considerable assets to plug our 2C hole.

I was really hoping PLD would be our long term fix there but he just didn't work out. We haven't done as much to address our need at top 4 RHD but that is a much rarer position to fill and a significant portion of the league is also constantly needing to address that position to no avail as well.

Trading away our draft picks to fill that hole isn't working and moving young players who could potentially do so is likely not the right move either. We are likely going to need to address these needs internally and right now we have a few young guys that could potentially do that so I don't think trading them away is the answer unless we have a surefire thing coming back. Youngish and signed with term or willing to sign.

it's funny how many teams are looking for center help around the league yet people act like it's going to be easy to acquire and wonder why were stuck paying for rentals.. like colorado a much more desirable place has spent years since kadri looking for a 2C and then had to end up paying that price for rental brock nelson...

we traded a 1st for stastny and tried to sign him he chose to go elsewhere
traded a 1st for hayes wasn't a good fit for either
traded for pld hoping he would be the long term solution but he immediately wanted out
traded for monahan and tried to sign him but he chose to go else where

does someone have a list of legit 2C's that have no trade protection and term that have been traded in the years of contention?
Yup. There are basically 3 unicorn type players: a legit top 2 C, a top pair RHD and a bona fide starting goalie.

They are rare, and practically everyone is looking for them. Then you consider the added difficulties of a high tax, bad weather, small market team like Winnipeg and you can see that these players are incredibly hard to attain.

This TDL was especially difficult as player availability was even less than usual.

The Cody eakin disrespect.

What are the odds J Toews comes back next year and is a legit option for our 2C? Where he's a 50+ pt player? I would love to see him as a bridge to when Yager can be a regular NHL contributor in a year or two.

Pretty slim imo. I'd love to be wrong, but he is probably a character guy who would slot in on the bottom line if he can still skate.

I don't think anyone ever thought he was a solution to anything in the top 6 more of a stop gap but obviously didn't work out. Even at the time most thought we didn't give up much for him and it was a pretty ho-hum move.
I thought it was a terrible trade...and then I saw him play and it made it worse!

Really, though...Chevy bailed out VGK on a terrible player making nearly $4M so they could go make some useful deadline moves.
