I think this is maybe where @Buffdog comments about manager mode have some merit.I think Pionk is where we upgrade our RD. If Chevy can pull off a miracle and get one of Parayko, Pulock, Dobson, or Andersson, then we should let Pionk walk at FA, but not trade him. He's been playing to good this season and we’ll need that in the playoffs.
My issue with Pionk is he up for a new contract and he will want to get paid based on his play this season, but his play this season has been an outlier and I don’t think he will be able to repeat it again next season.
Now, if he was willing to re-sign affordable, then sure keep him, upgrade our top pairing RD, and move DeMelo to the 3rd pair.
If we let Pionk go - I think we have to concede it will likely be a step down - at least in the short term.
Pionk is a top 10 rhd in points this year. There is very little likelihood we improve on that. We may get a better defensive forward. But even that is up for debate.
My stance is we may have to reluctantly let Pionk go because his price is too high, but I’m going in eyes open to the fact it will likely be a drop off in the position. It’s just about minimizing the drop off and hopefully having someone with a high ceiling that can get there quickly. Salo?
