He's 31. Contract runs to age 37. $8.5 million cap hit per year. There's definitely downside to the trade, but if he plays like he can he fills that 2C spot for a couple of years solidly.

As long as people are fine with losing Ehlers because there is no way the team will be wanting to spend 16 million on the second line. The only team who does that is Toronto who doesn't spend on a goalie or depth.

I'd be looking at Morgan Frost, maybe Kirby Dach for the 2C position.... if you could get one cheap enough. Some combo of 2nd round picks and B prospects (nobody named Lambert, chibs, yager, freij, salo or DD)
If Ehlers is all that people have been making him out to be as a line driver, a player like that should be enough to complete the second line.

Evans, Newhook, Dach…….none would cost much IMO
But any an upgrade over Names balanced game
really in what sense? chytil plays a big speed game with rush offense, and is solid at generating shots and chances, while listed at 6'3 210 lb. that's not perfetti like at all.
i wanted chytil a few years ago when PLD initially wanted out, but really hasn't been great in a couple years, likely due to injury and NYR falling off. i think he could be a bounce back guy like cozens on a new team.

It's funny how the NHL works now. You win 3 in a row and you get into a playoff race. A few more and you are in the playoff picture. Still too early to know who's in and who's out. I think Pageau would be a good 2C, definitely fits for PK role, defensive zone draws, but I don't think Melo could convince him to come to Winnipeg.
Dach's on a roll. Montreal finally put Newhook, Dach and Laine together, and they are starting to click.
the line has not been as effective as last year. i don't see ehlers using the speed as much as previous years, but he still has been effective i think at 5v5, although not as prolific as other seasons. he rates high on the team again in 5v5 pts/60, generating shots and penalties. he did have a big 5v5 goal drought but i still think he's producing scoring opportunities and helping the line cash them in more than the other 2 fwds.
the 2 running mates at fwd imo need to step up a bit offesnively. perfetti has 2 games with 5v5 goals this year that were sandwiched between a 23-game and a 10-game drought. namestnikov does have 6 5v5 goals this year, but typically isn't a big shooter and more of the clean up guy on the line (high sh%, low SOG volume). both are near the bottom of the top-9 Fwds in scroing efficiency. i was fine with Names last year at 2c, however this year their limitations on offense are showing a bit. they need someone to help push offense a bit more consistently in my view.

Yup, you get what you pay for most times, poster wanted cheap so I listed a few cheap options.
If you want high end then open the bank up bc it’s going to be expensive.

Ehlers-Perfetti are not as effective at driving the play and tilting the ice this season, but about equally effective in goal scoring and more effective in goal differential (15-8 this year, 15-11 last year in approximately the same TOI at 5v5). Of course, those ice-tilting chickens may come home to roost yet...
But if your eye test is saying "these guys aren't quite the same as last year" you're right.
with helle in net they'll likely always do better than their xGA. i just don't see threatening or consistent offense from either names or perfetti. i thought names was fine last year at 2c, but perhaps they were warranted in trying to retain a 2c in monahan who has been v good in columbus.
Yeah with the benefit of hindsight paying 5.5 mil for Monny looks like a no brainer for the Jets. Not many of us would have agreed with that last July.
I agree with a lot of other posts that while I like Zib acquiring him eliminates any chance to resign Ehlers and I think I would rather have Nik starting a 6 year deal at 29 vs Zib at 32 with 5 to go.
Am I crazy or does a Zib for JT Miller 1 for 1 trade make way to much sense?

In terms of shot metrics, Ehlers+Names were better last year. More of everything good, less of everything bad in 2023-24. They're significantly worse defensively than they are offensively compared to last season (but they're worse on both sides of the shot metric ledger).
In terms of goals, they're scoring at a slightly reduced rate, but giving up goals-against at a massively reduced rate.
Last year they were outscoring their xGF by 25% and opponents were underscoring the xGA by 11%.
This year, they're outscoring their xGF by 37% and opponents are underscoring xGA by 55%.
Results are great. Process...not so much.

I'll quickly add that they don't seem to be spending much more time in their own zone or much less time in the o-zone than last year. They're just not generating quite as much on offense and giving up way more on defense. (According to NHL EDGE Puck and Player Tracking Statistics - Comparisons).

I wonder if that’s something the team could or would ever be willing to try switching names and Kupari. Probably not.
I don't think it would be between Zib and Ehlers, more like replacing talent if you know Ehlers wasn't re-signing. It would give a little cushion on an Ehlers own rental if you could get Zib relatively cheap, while offloading a bit of salary somewhere else. Also give us one hell of a top 6 for this year's playoff run.
I just imagine it only works if u know ehlers isn’t coming back as you can’t have 16 mil tied to your second line.,
He's halfway through year 1 of 5, so may change in the future. However hard to not consider him a big upgrade this season considering what Names/2nd line has done.
