2024/25 Trade Rumours, Speculation etc Thread

I like the idea of looking for a guy with a little more grit to play with Perfetti and Namestnikov if Ehlers isnt around. It's a tough skill set to find in the top six but if you can find it those guys are worth their weight in gold in the playoffs.
Offer sheet knies :naughty:

Nik Ehlers - 6x$7.5M - seems too low, but if I'm Chevy, I'm signing him to that immediately. IN
Neal Pionk - 6x$7M - count me out at that term and dollars. OUT
Alex Iafallo - 3x$3.7M - seems about right. I rush to sign him too. IN
Mason Appleton - 3x$3.6M - Nope, we can better use that $$. OUT
Brandon Tanev - 2x$2.4M - I think I'd sign him to that. IN

If Fly would sign that deal it would be done by now.

Agree to all of these excluding Pionk.
A bit much for Alex, but I'd sign him.

I'm signing Ehlers to that too but there is no way he signs for that.

If you let Pionk walk, how do you go that hole? I'd like to hear a specific plan that could actually happen.

Someone is going to over pay for Nik but if the Jets can give max term at 8m that might be enough for him to re up. Might be a moot point if he has decided that he wants to play elsewhere.

True, and that's the 8ish million dollar question.

If I was Nik I'd be moving on and that's not a slight on Winnipeg. I'd want to have a new experience and be a marquee vet with an up and coming team.

It's why I think Montreal fits the bill, his buddy is there for another year maybe he stays with Nik there, the Habs as much as I hate to say it have some really good prospects in the pipeline to it's up and coming roster and it's Montreal after all.

Neither of those holes get filled for next season if we don’t sign those two. In both cases we lose offense. Who knows what Chevy’s plan will be.

That would be the most interesting career move for Ehlers. He would essentially sap his production because he wouldn't get on PP1 there. He'd be playing for the sheer kicks of being in Montreal during good times, which is something like a rock star.

And his presence would make Demidov a 3rd line player. Which is an interesting enough dynamic.

I still think Vancouver makes the strongest pitch. They are the most European team. Good team to kick a soccer ball around with. Pettersson needs help. And their owner will not rebuild, so they'll pay for talent, overpay too.

Didn't Demidov sign for 2 more years in Russia?

I would hate to lose Ehlers for nothing. Cant pay him more than Scheifele. Gotta keep $ for Connors huge deal coming up.

I had figured Iafallo would walk. That he wants to stay is a pretty big deal. He is versatile and brings some grit. He is not going to take a pay cut though.

Appleton is decent. But how many 20 point guys can you have? I think he gets more elsewhere than the Jets will offer

For Pionk, I am mostly worried about term. He has by far his best years in contract years.

Why do ppl think Ehlers is getting close to 10m in FA?
The Jets have the 5th most cap space in the league this off-season they can muster up as competitive of an offer as anyone.

Yeah I'd say both are very hard to replace but as we've seen it's easier to replace winger scoring than top 4 D.

We've been without a few of our top scorers through the season and we're still 3rd in GF.

IF Nik leaves, we will need some internal help and maybe a FA add to recapture the loss.

Cole is about 20 points shy of Ehlers this year. Considering he's had big growth this year, and if he can avoid that mid season lull, I bet he can bridge that gap next year.

Then we have to recoup Cole's likely 55 points from this year.

If Chibby or Lambo (or both) come in, I'd bet we get a good part of the way there.

If Vilardi manages to stay healthy that could be a few more points to assist.

Obviously a lot would have to go right, and we'd lose the dynamic play that Nik provides, but I don't think its nearly as dire to lose Ehlers as it's being made out to be.

Appleton would need to be reminded of life without the Jets. Leaving could be a career ending decision. But as someone else mentioned there might not be a spot.

I would caution Ehlers of planning a life with a flake like Laine. Laine is cancer and a bad hockey player outside the PP. The BJs very publicly paid to get him the hell away from their team. The Habs are going to duct tape Laine's ignorant mouth shut until the next TDL and get whatever they can. I can't see any team making any long or even medium commitment to Laine on his next contract.

I agree its not dire, however the sheer fact he's amongst the upper echelon of talent in the league, top 5 fan popularity, own draft pick, and a very classy player makes it a hard pill to swallow. I hope we pay this man and keep him. Trust in Chevy. Ehlers has loved this city and played his heart out, we are close. If we make a big run this spring i think he stays!!!

Chevy's plan is the big unknown. Ehlers and Pionk are probably the 2 most important Jets players that Chevy has allowed to walk up to UFA status. Historically he has either re-signed or traded players prior to the TDL of their UFA season or traded them going into their pending UFA season. Up until now the most important players that have played out their UFA seasons in a Jets uniform is Frolik, Myers and Dilion. Important players at the time, but none would be considered core. The question for me is what is different this year? Does Chevy believe he has a true contender and is throwing caution to the wind? Are the player askes beyond what he wants to pay? Does he believe the players aren't worth what they are asking for? Does he know he can re-sign them and wants to see the season play out? Man I'd love to know what Chevy knows.

You beat me to this. I just don’t think Nik can count on Laine being in Montreal for long, way easier to just hang out in the off season or do a trip or two together like buddies do.

It will be a fascinating offseason.

I understand why people are in the must keep Ehlers camp. He's a net positive player, really exciting, super likeable, and has been here a long time.

However, he's likely the best he'll ever be, and considering his extremely significant core injury, the fact that he is injury prone, and his reliance on his speed to play his game, he's likely to not age well and his play is likely to fall off a cliff.

I'll remind people that Wheeler signed his legacy contract after b2b 91 point seasons, beloved, and our captain.

That did not age well.
