Would you be willing to trade Ehlers for fair value? Or is he too important as the 2nd line driver?
My first choice would be to re-sign Ehlers as he is one of my favourite players and I think he plays an important role on the team. I also think it would be a mistake for Chevy to let him walk to free agency, so yes I would be willing to trade Ehlers for value.

Compelling argument but the real solution is an actual 2C. Give Brad 20 games in the A and if he continues his progress you have 2C until then dont fix a winning team

Brad didn't look 20 AHL games away from being ready for NHL 2C in TC. He didn't look like a lock to ever be an NHL 2C. He showed promise but that is well short of being a lock. He looked like a full AHL season away from a sheltered winger role in the NHL for a season before moving to 2C IF he continues to progress.

Well Names will be 32 y/o next month and has averaged 34 points over 82 games throughout his career so I don’t think that anyone should consider him a solution as a #2 Center. I’m not sure about Perfetti but the organization should be strategizing on how to jumpstart his career not give him even worse usage.

I don't think anyone considers Names to be any more than a placeholder at 2C - but he did pretty well there last year.

With the obvious recognition by the org that 2C needs to be a priority I'm a little surprised that Vilardi hasn't been tried there.

But what is best for the team as a whole? I isolated Ehlers and Scheifele together over the last 3 complete seasons and they are 54GF - 30GA for a 64.29 GF% and a xGF% of 52.32%. Pretty impressive. However if you isolate Ehlers with Names they are 24GF - 12GA for a 66.67 GF% with a 55.21 xGF%. slightly more impressive. What is the common denominator Nik Ehlers.

Ehlers individual totals over the last 3 years 144GF - 88GA for a 62.07 GF% and a 54.05 xGF%. Pretty much not impacted by the center he plays with as long as it isn't Lowry as they go together like water and vinegar.

As I've argued Ehlers should be expected to drive is own line as he is the least impacted by not playing with the team's #1 center.
For me, this is all the more reason to get Lambert or Barron in at 2C - maybe Ehlers carries them long enough to develop... nothing to lose if the second line doesn't start producing any time soon

Honestly id elevate barron first... but im fine with waiving iafallo because no one will claim that contract
Honestly I think if Gus gets in the lineup Barron is the guy who gets scratched. He got a yelling from the coach in the Minnesota game for a bad penalty. I think the offensive instincts aren't there. 3rd line is his ceiling.

And the most likely scenario will be Ehlers gets traded sometime between now and the TDL and Connor re-signs long term next summer and him and Scheifele play together for another 7 years.

I think I will bookmark this post for posterity
I just don't think there is any way you can trade Ehlers now, going into his final season. The team wants to win and I think most people are in agreement that the Jets have a better chance of making the playoffs with Ehlers than without him. The Jets can't mortgage for next year with this core. And a trade of Ehlers won't be 1 for 1, in all likelihood, because of his contract status. It would more likely be prospective players, and for everyone in that dressing room losing a key player would be a message from management that they are not trying to win this year. I just hope the Jets don't use another 1st on a 2C.

And iafallo has any offensive instincts? How Lafallo gets so many opportunities I’ll never know.

He does a lot of good things that aren't offensive in nature. Also he seems like a great team guy - bonded well.

I don't know if anyone remembers but there was concern when we acquired him that he was a Cali guy, loved surfing might not be happy to come to Winnipeg but he's been a total pro - works hard, never complains and seems to be very well liked.

Yeah, he's earning too much on the 4th line but I really like that line for the first time since Tanev - and the coaches do too playing them 12 reliable minutes a night.

That's good for the other lines, hopefully keep them better rested through the season. We might even see better efforts in b2bs

I like our 4th line right now. Any time you can get quality minutes out of the 4th line it’s a good thing especially in the meat grinder that is an 82 game season. So far that group is getting it done.

Well he gets PP time. Arniel must see something. He actually had a strange game last night where he made two nice shot blocks in the defensive zone, which eventually ended up in the back of the net.

You can see a little bit of chemistry with Pionk on the ice, carrying over from his UMD days.

He has enough instincts and offensive ability to be able to play with the high skill guys from time to time. He also is very good at pursuing the puck and winning board battles. Things we need on this team. Imo he's probably better then Apples and would ideally fit on the third in his place.

He's likely going to be a luxury we can't afford next year.
