Stupid question, but I think Jarventie is just precautions, not necessarily due to an injury. He would still be included?

Could be missing a lot more as the SOIR designation is more difficult to find this season without cap friendly.

Puck Pedia calls it (injured non roster list) but the non roster list is players signed to contracts in the minors, confused listing per Puckpedia plus their site is most difficult to look at.

Several IR or LTIR designations might instead be SOIR that I’ve missed, CF where have you gone.

Brandon Saad and Spencer Stastney are listed as Personal < Non-Roster not as SOIR.

There's definitely a lot of speculation that goes into this, largely because Bettman does not believe in roster transparency/that fans aren't interested in this stuff, but...

Stupid question, but I think Jarventie is just precautions, not necessarily due to an injury. He would still be included?

Ottawa did not list Jarventie on their roster day, but they also did not list him as re-assigned, so he's probably non-roster for precautionary reasons and SOIRd to gain cap-relief

Without going through the whole list, I believe most of those guys did not play NHL games last year so would not qualify for SOIR

Brandon Saad and Spencer Stastney are listed as Personal < Non-Roster not as SOIR.

Not sure of Stastney's situation either, but PuckPedia has him listed as both Non-Roster (Personal) and SOIR. If that personal is health related (ie. disability or mental heath not necessarily injury) maybe that could account?

How is SOIR different than regular IR?
SOIR is if a player is on a 2-way contract & was on an NHL roster for less than 50 games played last year & is injured prior to opening roster, their Cap Hit while injured is pro-rated based on # of days on roster last year multiplied by the current year cap hit.

IR frees up a spot on the roster to move in another player. It does not, however, free up any cap space. So the salary of the player on IR still counts toward the salary cap limit. This is more of a temporary designation for a player expected to come back during the season. It can also be used for illness.

In Puckpedia they show SOIR in the same area as Buried/Retained. For example Minton in Toronto and Highmore in Ottawa.

I would think that would cover Reinbacher. He's out 5 months, though didn't suit up for any games last year with the team. Dunno if he counts.
:dunno:
I don’t think he counts for SOIR, because of the no NHL games last year. The Lightning have two such players who are injured coming into camp, not on SOIR because of no games or days on NHL roster in 2023/24.

They are on “injured non-roster” list, which I gather is something completely different.

Injured non-roster means they got injured in the off-season/pre-preseason
You can only put a player on the regular Injured Reserve to start the season if it is an injury dating back to the previous season

Ah that makes sense as a distinction, thank you.
Are these distinctions detailed somewhere or did you get from the CBA?

That's from the CBA - 16.11

What's interesting to me (and this may be a translation error on my part from legalese), is that part of the distinction allows player on IR to still attend team meetings and practices, but not for players deemed INR.

There is no requirement for SOIR that the player participated in a NHL game or even had to be on the roster for a single day the previous season.

Players like Reinbacher with zero NHL days in 2023-24 on SOIR will have $0 cap hits, and receive their AHL salary while injured.

The blended salary SOIR players are paid is $Salary = (% of days in NHL prior season) * NHL Salary + (% of days not in NHL prior season) * AHL salary.***

*** For juniors eligible players on SOIR who are not AHL eligible, they should receive their Major Juniors salary of $10,500 while injured.

So to my knowledge there are four injury distinctions now.

Long-term injured reserve (LTIR)
Injured reserve (IR)
Season opening injured reserve (SOIR)
Injured reserve - non roster (IR-NR)

CF usually placed players on SOIR but there was a non roster distinction for things like personal leave or day of waivers placement but it wasn’t seen clearly as Injured reserve non roster.

PuckP has a IR non roster distinction and an area for SOIR, as some players are listed on the non roster injured reserve and some are listed in the buyout/ retained salary section on SOIR.

It looks like IR non roster is for players not counting against the salary cap that are injured but haven’t been assigned yet due to being injured and SOIR is for players counting against the cap even if it is an insignificant amount.

Injured Non-Roster simply means the player reported to camp injured, vs being injured during camp. Injured Non-Roster works pretty much the same as regular Injured Reserve for practical purposes.** Players on either IR or I-Non-Roster are eligible for SOIR. SOIR cap hit can be $0.

There is also a separate Non-Roster list (note the lack of Injury designation). Players who are granted team leave for example are placed on this list. It opens up an Active Roster slot, but does not remove the player’s cap hit.

**The only notable difference I’m aware of off the top of my head is players on a Non-Roster category would not be eligible for a Roster Bonus. However even though Roster Bonuses are still permitted I’m not aware of any being included in contracts for a long time now.
