We should only have playoffs then. No competitive advantage for the most important level of hockey.

But playoff games count, they go into the record books, players contracts are effected by them, team and player legacies are largely defined by them. Not the case with pre-season, where none of the regular players care at all.

Pre-season games don't go into the record books, at the end of the day they are just scrimmages that give them extra gate revenue more than anything else, like when European soccer teams come over here to play. There are numerous interviews with players across all different professional sports leagues who pretty clearly say how they feel about them. Heck, many NFL teams don't play their starters at all in pre-season, and the ones that do it's maybe a series or two for one of the games, and that league is doing just fine.
