Because now the goalie coming in gets a warm up. Whatever that is. Probably a five minute break to shoot pucks on the cold goalie.

Sure, but there’s nothing stopping the goalie from faking an injury and getting an extended stoppage. If that was a thing, it would happen all the time regardless of the warmup rule.

They don’t do it because it forces them out of the game, the referees will absolutely retaliate if they think they’re being abused, and it’s just lame behavior that doesn’t really make sense in a hockey context. Fatigue hurts the defense far more than the offense.

Oh good, an new thread where I can continue my one man crusade:

Over the recent years, the NHL adjusted the rules so all pucks over the glass in the offensive zone stay in the offensive zone. There is a loophole with this that needs to be closed where you should not be able to intentionally flip the puck over the glass in order to create an offensive zone faceoff.

Tomas Hertl was smart enough to do this last year (good for him) and it cost the Red Wings the game, and ultimately a playoff spot.

This is not in the spirit of the game or the rule adjustments they made and the loophole needs to be closed.

I think it'll be closer to like 60 seconds with some pucks being shot. I don't think we'll be getting a 5 min break. I guess this could open up some conversation about goalies being pulled because the team or they themself are playing poorly, but I think there's a difference in a sitting goalie seeing that situation becoming a reality and an unexpected injury where that goalie has to immediately prepare.

It's none of these things. It's a safety concern and this rule was actually implemented back in March of last year, after a linesman was injured by a skate blade from someone sitting on the boards.

I would still think it is overall more dangerous to have both skates flying over the boards in a hurry (and higher) than to have a casual leg dangling over the side.

I’m still trying to figure out why it’s a problem for a player to dangle his leg over the boards before a line change. That aspect of the game has been around since boards became a thing. Did something happen to make this an issue?

When there are players with legs hanging over it is more likely a live puck will make contact with the exposed leg and cause a needless stoppage in play.

So apparently they addressed this in secret or just make up rules as they feel fit, because Marchand got a penalty for it.



To quote Brad Marchand "That's not a f***in' rule". You can't just make things up on the fly to effect one game one way and ignore it in another.

I believe #5 is only for when a goalie is forced to be removed to go through concussion protocol by the spotters, not for any old injury.

I feel like rule #5 will be abused. It’s basically a timeout without using a timeout.

Down by a goal with two minutes left in the third period and there’s a scramble in front of your own net? Goalies are gonna fake injuries all the time

They would have to be removed from the game for some stretch of time though I would imagine.

They’re not making anything up on the fly. If this wasn’t called in another game, then that should be addressed with that crew. But it’s right there in the rulebook.

I’m not familiar with the time Hertl did this. It’s such a rare occurrence that I’m not too surprised Marchand didn’t know it was a penalty tbh.

The funniest part of that clip is the legendarily biased Boston commentators trying to pretend Marchand didn’t do that on purpose lol.
