The issue with slow cooking prospects is you wind up paying for ufa years at the NHL level. Cap constraints mean you need to maximize guys in rfa and elcs. Something like barkey and luchenko making the team despite size and strength issues would be trying to maximize this contractual advantage

Slow cooking prospects would be an improvement. This team leaves them cooking until they're burnt out, dried up husks.

They do take advantage and then they get sent back down ASAP. You then defend that, despite it being contrary to what you preach.
Like whom?

Brink is a good example, struggled, went down, played well, got recalled.
He was one of the worst forwards last year, and clearly wasn't NHL ready for a top 9 role on a team with playoff aspirations.
It's up to him to work hard over the summer, and win a job in camp.

Not if they're not ready for the NHL.
Only a couple players a year play in their D+1 season.
A handful in their D+2. Close to half of the top 20 by their D+3 season, but only a few drafted after that, mostly in the top 50.
Most of your top 20 by their D+4 season.
Lesser prospects don't make the NHL until their 4-5th seasons if ever.

So Luchanko 2025 or 2026 depending how he does this season.
Bonk 2025 or 2026
The others drafted the last two years 2026-2029.

Like whom? Seriously? Basically almost every prospect. Some of whom you are actually right about in assuming they should have a spot or keep one, and then you instantly change your mind when the Flyers fail.

Farabee Frost michgod
Foerster cooter brink
Laughton poehling barkey

The future is now. If we're going to miss the playoffs lemme watch the guys who are going to get me there. There's enough steady veterans on this team to spread the youth out especially with the same defenders coming back

The reason they extended Seeler and Hathaway is obvious from the LHV roster.

Flyers aren't going to have real competition at the bottom of the roster until probably 2026, when players like Luchanko and Bonk become starters, 2027 when the 2025 1st rd picks arrive, and 2028-2029 when there's a steady supply of bottom of the roster players from the drafts starting in 2023.

Love to see Rizzo, Tuomaala, Attard, Andrae et al push for jobs, but realistically, if I projected them as top 6/top 4 players I'd be a "homer."

Farabee - Couts - Michkov
Tippett - Frost - TK
Foerster - Laughton - Brink
Cates - Poehling - Hathaway

York - Sanheim
Seeler - Drysdale
Zamula - Risto

Would be nice to upgrade over Laughton this season, but how?

Hathaway is a dime a dozen player. There's absolutely no reason to sign someone like him to a two year deal a year before his deal even expires. You can find those type of guys 4 weeks after FA starts

The reason they extended Seeler and Hathaway is obvious from the LHV roster.

The reason they extended Seeler and Hathaway is because they've so badly misunderstood the assignment as to have not engaged with it at all.

The way a rebuilding team is supposed to rebuild is to churn the bottom of their roster, moving out people who are of interest to other teams, and to empty space for their younger players to step up, because critically, after a certain point, you don't learn anything playing at the AHL level. Unless you're a once in a generation talent, you only learn how to elevate your game to NHL standards by playing against people who are at that level. The Seelers and Hathaways and Laughtons of the world should have all been moved for value ages ago. Couturier, well, he was going to be here at his salary and health situation. Choosing Sanheim as the one high end vet defenseman, that's defensible. You want a small core of veterans who these players can learn from on the ice and emulate... the key word being SMALL, not "3/4 of the roster". But the rest of the roster should have been filled with young players getting their first taste of NHL competition, overpriced but still marginally useful vets who came to us with assets attached, and fill out whatever else with JAGs and PTO fodder who might pop off.

Instead, we continue on the eternal treadmill of the creaseless mind, being f%*^ing Flyers because being f%&#ing hockey players is beyond them.

Hathaway not a "dime a dozen" player, he's an above average 4th line wing.
He's not a player you build a team around, but he is a reliable veteran who helps set the tone.
A tad bit overpaid, but he provides depth in a role you don't want good prospects to fill.

Couts (32), Hathaway (33), Laughton (30), Seeler (31).
That's your small core.

TK (27), Sanheim (28), Poehling (26) are the only others in the probable top 18 over 25.
Fedotov (28) in goal.

Johnson (36), Deslauriers (33) aren't going to dress on a regular basis.

First off, prior evidence proves that "not going to dress on a regular basis" thing is false, you've said that before and been wrong before.

Second, who killed and ate Ristolainen? Last I checked, he's still a Flyer and well over 25.

That's 11 out of 23 players, bare minimum, who are over 25 and going to play most if not every game this year.

A small core would be 6-7. We're substantially over that, and again, prior history suggests we're not going to do a great job of moving those players out this year. Certainly, none of Couts, Hathaway, Seeler, TK, Sanheim, Fedotov, or Deslauriers are going anywhere, and I have a hard time seeing someone wanting Johnson. Maybe Poehling (who, naturally, is one of the players over 25 I would prefer we keep.)

There's a better chance that Biden gets re-elected than Deslauriers being scratched. We all know you know this.

In any sport, marginal players get one or two opportunities to win a job.

We've seen this with the Phillies, Dahl got a shot to start, fell on his face, Wilson and Clemons have done well enough to have a future, same with Ruiz.

AHL players get recalled due to injuries, they have to take advantage of that opportunity to win a job. Zamula did, Allison didn't b/c every time he played well, he got dinged or injured.
Seeler got another chance to start and ran with it.

Some players aren't talented enough, some can't handle the pressure, some can't stay healthy.
In regards to the first sentence, I don’t think anyone disagrees. I think the disagreement is that maybe it shouldn’t be like that?

Who is going to sit for Deslauriers? Not Cates, not Foerster. He's not going to play much, and with his NMC gone, Briere will try to move him at some point.

Johnson is the 7th D-man and gone after this season.

Missed Risto (30), who'll be showcased for a TDL or summer 2025 move.

So your core veterans are Couts (32), Hathaway (33), Laughton (30), Seeler (31).
With TK (27), Sanheim (28), Poehling (26) and Fedotov (28)

Laughton is vulnerable if they find an upgrade at center.

11 of 20 starters are 25 and under (Michkov, Farabee, Frost, Tippett, Foerster, Brink, Cates, York, Drysdale, Zamula, Ersson).

And that excludes Andrae, Attard, McDonald, Lycksell, Tuomaala, Rizzo, Desnoyers, Avon, who may get a shot at some point, either due to injury or playing themselves out of LHV.
In regards to the first sentence, I don’t think anyone disagrees. I think the disagreement is that maybe it shouldn’t be like that?
It should be if you have good depth in the organization.
Because if a prospect gets a shot and blows it, another prospect deserves to get their chance.

guys that you have stated in the past, that just aren't good enough...so really which is it...you really need to stop trying to have it both ways here

Every year the guy you insist won't play much ends up playing a lot.

There are more and more posts popping up on various social media outlets ripping the New Age crap. This organization has been poorly run for a long time.
Comcast may not get the message yet but the fans have. MM is their saving grade. If he hits, the franchise has a chance of avoiding irrelevancy. If he isn't exploited properly, ie surrounded with talent capable of winning, the Flyers might as well fold. The FO has no margin for error.

The club is at the limit of the cap. Probably will get some relief from ditching Johansen which will put them under. Still the coach's pets arming a mess of the roster and the cap. For what sensible reason are Deslauriers, Laughton and Johnson around? Laughton can't play center and there are better players here than him at wing; Johnson is toast and so is Deslauriers. That's close to six million that could be used wisely on better players that are already in the system. Then there's the Risto, Seeler situation. If it is a new era, shuffle these guys out of town. Their replacements are here now.
