Jake Guentzel for 6 years at 7.4 Mil
Ullmark and Carlo to the Senators for Chychrun (signing for 6 years 6.5 mil; a 1st and 2nd round picks in 2024 and 2nd round in 2025.

I am interested to see how they navigate this. If they can’t move Ullmark they only have $21m in cap space.

After Swayman that will likely be down to $13-$14m. Bring back Debrusk and it will be down to $8m-$9m.

So $8-$9m with 3 forward spots and a defensive spot to fill. Not much room for major upgrades if Ullmark stays.

Well exactly. First you'd have to see if there's a hometown discount assuming he does actually dream of that (I know he did when he was a teenager but that doesn't always hold as an adult) and then you'd assume the cap goes up, but do you plan ahead for that possibility by having contracts end then (Marchand comes off the books for one) to give you the option, do you make sure you have tradeable contracts so you don't have the 15 team NTC stuff or do you just lock up people now (like the Lindholms or Zadorovs) for several years and not even think about it.

If I'm Sweeney I design a possible pathway to make that a possibility but one that doesn't just wait to see, one that also looks to win now, maybe just not crazy all in like last year where you pay for it later.

Necas yes (the Ullmark for Necas as primary pieces in a trade that's been discussed and rumored makes me salivate a little) but Kase? He's fine in a world tournament but I don't see him holding up to one game against a team like Florida.

The Ottawa Senators' president of hockey operations and general manager says there's no truth to the rumours on social media that the team is looking to trade its star captain.

“Complete B.S.,’’ he told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Monday in The Athletic. “We are building this team around Brady. His leadership and unique skill set are rare.

“There is absolutely no validity to it.’’

Tkachuk was the subject of some trade speculation earlier this season based off a tweet by Spittin' Chiclets podcaster Ryan Whitney, suggesting the Senators “maybe’’ moving him before the March 8 trade deadline.

Were you someone who was screaming about the lack of face off wins, Necas certainly does not help with that ? Trading Carlo makes zero sense, that defense you proposed is definitely weaker.

It’s undoubtedly weaker. But it’s more attack minded, is meaner, and more balanced to not be spending 2/3rds of the game defending instead of scoring. You also have added a potential star top six scoring forward that is 25. I don’t think folks are putting together this guy has averaged 60 points a season over the last two season from the 3rd line in his 24 and 25 year old seasons. Will he need Zacha to take draws, especially on his weak side? Sure.

There are also plenty of other options for replacing Carlo’s spot at 5 on 5 going in a range of directions from very expensive to cheap. Montour, Roy, Pesce, Carrier out there in UFA. Or maybe get a young D that doesn’t have room like Spence in LA with his redundancy with Clarke. Personally, I’d rather sign a 29-30 year old D in UFA than a center. Not only is the aging curve better, but the depth of talent out there is better.

I dunno. Lots of binary lateral thinking in these parts.

Ullmark getting it done is a pipe dream. A pipe laced with something strong level pipe dream.

You either suck it up with Carlo and look to replace Carlo in a deep RD UFA class (Pesce, Montour, Carrier, Roy, etc) or via an Ullmark deal or you move on to the 30 year old UFA Cs coming off of disappointing seasons.

To me, you are dumb to not at least consider it. But seems I am in a very very large minority in these parts.

Unless Swayman takes 5 million/per, someone is leaving. They won't tie up 11+ million in two goalies when they need to revamp their top 6 drastically.

He can put 15 teams on his list, still leaves a good chance that the 16-17 that remain, we have 2-3 decent suitors. He can help control his destiny or end up in a not so favorable situation.

I think Jake is going to Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver. Outside chance Winnipeg but I can't see anyone choosing Winnipeg.

The only big name UFC Center I see hitting the market is Lindholm. He'll decide if he wants to play for a cup or if he wants to go to the highest bidder. If it's the highest bidder, he doesn't belong in our locker room. If he wants a cup, I'd welcome him here with a fair term and AAV.

There’s one good top 4 RD and a) he’s not a PK1 b) he’s going to get double what Carlo makes and 3) he’s probably resigning in Florida.

Offering Pesce/Roy/Carrier as options is pretty rough.
