2024-25 Roster…too soon?

yeah seth at 9.5 per for 5 more years isn't being moved, they need to retain on him so his deal is fair value as if he was a ufa this summer signing a 5 year deal (7 per?)

I mean I guess if he's fine playing on the 3rd pairing 2-3 years from now when the kids are ready and not getting any PP time then it would make sense to keep him. His retaining $2.5m really that much worse than having $9.5m locked up for 5 more years though? Especially if he's not being a useful vet out there.

I'll believe Murphy and Jones get traded when I see it.

Allan getting a little love from nhl.com
Nolan Allan, Chicago Blackhawks: Selected in the first round (No. 32) of the 2021 NHL Draft, Allan is a defensive defenseman, ranking first among rookies at his position with 55 hits and third with 40 blocked shots. He is second among rookie defensemen with eight points (one goal, seven assists), all at even strength, and averages 15:14 of ice time in 39 games. The 21-year-old has played a key role on Chicago’s penalty kill and is tied for second among first-year defensemen in takeaways (seven).

Ben Pope's article about the KD presser:

But in the absolute worst news of the day:

The Hawks don’t have any other active trade negotiations going on at the moment, Davidson said, but March 7 remains a while away.

So Jones to Colorado is dead (for now) FFS. We have to continue to stomach watching him for a little while still.

Yikes.

If they had active negotiations, would Kyle even say as much?

He's very good at tip toing the line, I think he would just said something like 'anything can happen', 'we are always listening' blabla.

But to outright say there is nothing is disappointing. Unless it's a diversion tactic, but I doubt that at this point.

The amount of promising/quality young D we have is astounding and it’s going to pay off in the long run 100%. Now just imagine if we add Schaefer too, then it becomes just downright ridiculous.

FWIW I did 10 simulated mock drafts and in 4 of the 10 we landed Schaefer, with the other 6 being a combo of Hagens/Misa/Martone. So regardless the future is looking bright. The progress we’re seeing right now from the kids will be twofold next season…and yet we’ll also most likely still be bad enough to be in on McKenna. Picture that level of excitement. I believe we’re headed in that direction.

Hawks need what like $10 million to hit the projected cap floor next year without any further trades involving anyone signed beyond this season? 10 signed forwards on currently active NHL roster, 3 of which are on ELCs and two of which are essentially ELC (Reichel $1.2 and Slaggert $0.9). Only RFA is Kurashev (see ya). 7 signed defensemen on currenly active roster, two on ELCs with some more ELCs potentially in the mix. Kaiser and Crevier are RFAs. Two signed Goalies plus Soderblom as RFA.

With all those ELCs, it's an interesting question of how the Hawks would even be able to hit the Floor if they traded Jones. There aren't that many spots to plug in overpaid short-term veterans. It's not an "issue" so to speak the following year, once they extend Bedard and others will follow (Nazar, Dach, Allan, Del Mastro, Korchinski are all on the same RFA timetable).

Highly doubt he would say as much if he was having trade discussions.

He really does need to move one of these vet D.

Say it louder for all the people thinking the Hall trade was a way to get goodwill from ‘Rado for a Jones trade at the deadline

I've been intrigued by this as well. I googled this so it might not actually be right but I think the punishment for being below the floor is that you have to pay the difference to the league. So I would say they should sign who they want to sign that makes the team better but if it comes to having to give out dumb contracts to get above the floor, I'd rather just pay the penalty and give the ice time to the kids.

In theory, that's not bad in this situation and I would be in favor of it but the reality is that it adds to the negative PR where some fans would say they were being cheap.
