I'm having a hard time getting into this tournament. It's a lot better than I expected, but I'm still enjoying this no hockey break that I've been having. I'll probably look at some of the game tonight (Even though it's only on ESPN+ in the Bay Area), but everyone seems to be jazzed about it but I'm just all "ho-hum".

yeah these refs kind of suck, there were a few "no calls" in the third both ways whereby you could tell that they were in "not gonna call literally anything" mode
Yeah I'm generally a fan of letting them play, but hate when a pretty obvious no call leads to an immediate goal against the other way by the guy who committed the penalty.

Fun game over all though

Agreed. Only 4 nations is ridiculous (never mind this tournament doesn't have any prestige). I understand no Russia, but certainly Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany could have played...

It's a NHL players only tournament and those other countries (besides Russia) don't have enough players to field a team.

Besides, Canada obliterating Switzerland or Slovakia would have been unwatchable garbage. Every game so far has been played at an extremely high level. Apart from snubbing Russia this is as good as hockey gets and really shows how watered down the NHL product has become through expansion.

Ah, that makes some sense (though Czechia could easily field an all-NHL team). You could also do a ROW team and easily fill it with Switzerland, Germany, and Slovenia(n).

Upsets happen, and they are some of the best things to watch. In 2006 we beat Sweden and Canada, and in 2010 took Canada to a shootout.

I think even Czechia would struggle to field 6 NHL defensemen. Rutta would probably be on their top pair.

There's still the possibility of Finland or Sweden upsetting one of the North American countries and this way you also avoid the Germany vs. Switzerland games that nobody wants to watch. I actually think the NHL nailed this event for once apart from the Russia stuff which is not entirely their fault.

I think Czechia could have fielded an NHL only team but having an odd number of teams would have made scheduling difficult. I do like the 8 team format for the future World Cups of Hockey. I just hope the political climate can change so Russia can be included.

Is the WC of Hockey going to be IIHF events?

I do agree for this event 4 teams is perfect. They now have 3 years to figure out how to correctly run the World Cup.

Czechia has 21 nhl skaters in the nhl. 5 defensemen and 16 forwards.

Swiss has 10 nhl skaters. 4 defensemen and 6 forwards.

Putting those 2 countries together and you can still barely ice a defensive team.

Clearly we need a Holy Roman Empire team - Germany, Czechia, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and Slovenia (northern Italy, too, but there are no current NHL Italians).

Alexandre Texier is from the former Kingdom of Burgandy, too.
