Hindsight is 20/20 but after this 4 Nations performance from Granny 3 goals and 1 assist in 3 games including OT winner over Sweden, I wonder if his value would have been even higher now and if we could have gotten more for him at the TDL

Oof, that goal was Erik Karlsson to a tee. Make a nice offensive play to find a seam, but then he steps up trying to close a gap and gets beat. Odd-man rush the other way, and the puck in their net...

This format will obviously lead to a Canada vs. USA final every year. They need to mix it up a bit. A European team made up of Finland, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, and the UK, a team from Russia/Belarus/Latvia/Eastern Europe, Team Canada, and Team USA.

  • Team Euro vs. Team Russia
  • Team Canada vs. Team USA
This would present a better balance with 4 teams.

I hope there is peace in the world so Russia can play again. Putin needs to stop the war in Ukraine.
The 4-team format is a good idea for making the event feel more competitive and less predictable. It would give each region a fairer shot at winning while avoiding the over-dominance of any one nation.

...a team from Russia/Belarus/Latvia/Eastern Europe...
This will never happen and ending the Russian attack on Ukraine will not change this. No Latvians (or Slovaks, Estonians, Lithuanians, Poles, Romanians, Bulgarians, etc) are going to willingly play on a supranational team containing Russians, period - not for as long as any of us live.

None of them would make the team anyway.

...Another poster has already addressed this, but this is a very bad take.

Anyways, by your own logic this wouldn't work. After all, the US would have to be part of the European team, as would Canada. Maybe we can d a split? Let us do a UK/USA/Australia team and a Germany/Poland/Netherlands/Norwegian/Belgium/Ostland team.

Frankly I'd rather just leave international hockey entirely to the IIHF. I don't care about the Four Nations or World Cup or Olympics, I don't care about national teams, I don't care about Crosby or Matthews or whoever - I want to watch the Sharks. I don't want a two-week break.

I think the IIHF World Championship is probably the best tournament from a competitiveness perspective anyway, because Canada and USA are not overly dominant (though both are quite strong due to their size). The sixteen most recent finalists include eight different countries, and several others are possibilities for medals.

You would fit right in with the average leaf fan. If its not leafs it isn't hockey, it is why one of the biggest cities in the world always fails when it comes to any other kind of hockey team. Be it jr, or pro leagues. Toronto fans are such bad hockey fans they do not support it.

If it's an NHL sponsored tournament, then it should just be based on the demographics of the league + maybe the AHL. If you don't got enough players to field a legit team then you don't get a team.

Basically, the only additional teams would be the Russian and maybe Czech teams.

Czechia can't ice enough of a team if it is strictly nhl.

Compared to the mess that the NBA All Star Game has become and that the Pro Bowl more or less always was, the Four Nations Tournament has been a smashing success. The best players in the world playing together for nothing but pride.

I don't care so much about the national aspect, but seeing this level of skill on the ice at the same time is fantastic.

Do people not realize it has already been announced that this event is a prelude to the World Cup of Hockey that will start in 28 and run every 4 years. It has been announced it will be 8 teams not 4.

For anyone who liked the physicality and fights that won’t happen under IIHC rules. It is the NHL rules that allowed for the games to be as compelling as they have been.

I don't care so much about physicality and fights. I want effort.

NHL rink size over international is a huge factor too. It's not a coincidence that this has been the best tournament since 2010 Vancouver which was also on NHL ice. Sochi was awful, there were maybe 10 total goals scored.
