Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

He is pretty much at 30m for this year. 30 x a 15 year deal and that gets him to the 450 million it is rumored he is looking for. Play around with the term a bit or time the signing bonus part to place him in a better tax situation, and there is no reason why a deal can't get done. Give him an opt out later on so he can play with whoever he has always wanted to play with.

We should find out if either he or the Jays never really wanted to extend him.

I could see him being interested, why not?
Reports are he wants to headline a rotation, wouldn’t be a problem here, gets to headline a country’s rotation. It’s still a great city. Not a crazy pressure cooker market.
I don’t think the jays are in the top tier of IFA bonus pools, but not far off.
This guys probably the actual best FA available this off-season.
Would be a major coup.
Quickly trade Bo for IFA pool money, a comp pick and a prospect.

He literally took over a team that was the most recent WS winner and had just gone through a decade of contention and lead them to one of our darkest eras.
Sure I’ll listen to an argument that he was better than the current group but that is a pretty damn low bar to hit. And he certainly didn’t deserve to be brought up along side a HoF GM like Gillick.

But did Ash make poor moves for that championship roster, or did the team simply get too old especially after the strike? Guys like Carter and Molitor were ancient. I was a kid back then and didn't follow baseball but I remember that that was the talk in the town - the team was too old.

But yea off course Gillick is on his own level given the results. GIllick>AA>Ash>Riccardi>Atkins?

The fact that they avoided arbitration with Vlad seems like a good thing - no needless acrimony and bad feelings like with his past arbitration.

So he's gone at the end of the year.
Quite possibly but that’s not what Vladdy signing this one year deal means. Overall avoiding arbitration is a good thing, they are talking and they aren’t going to hurt their relationship more by going through that.

Who let the team get that old?
Ash traded Olerud to make room for Carter at 1B, Ash let Alomar walk in FA.
He had a winning core with a 25 y old Ed Sprague and a 22 year old Carlos Delgado ready to come in and fill spots.
I’m not saying he had it super easy. The Jays definitely had some issues that were hard to deal with and owners that didn’t want to spend as much as the previous championship teams did. But I believe Gillick or AA would have found a way to have more success with that group than he did.

As to your list the ranking the GMs in order I mostly agree. Gillick and AA are 1 and 2 with a significant gap between them and a significant gap after them. Ash is definitely ahead of Richardi but I find it really hard to place this group.
They have made the playoffs more than any previous GM but have done it during an expanded playoffs Ash or Richardi didn’t have the benefit of. They also haven’t won a single game in the playoffs despite having ownership willing to spend which the 2 other bottom tier GMs didn’t always have.

It's a joke what's happening here. If they don't believe in Vladdy, why didn't they trade him? If you're not going to pay him, you're not gonna pay anybody. This is scary where this is headed. Rogers is operating this team like a small market team. That's why they hired these clowns from Cleveland to begin with.

Was it Shapiro who gave that glorious soundbyte a season ago about Vladdy not being generational? Or something along those lines, just to knock him down a peg?

If this team lets him walk for nothing there is going to be an absolute volcano of angry fans, pissed off at how poorly this team's been run. Losing the brightest star would just be the nail in the coffin, I think.
