The Jays first offseason priority might be to acquire some dignity before anything else.
Using batting average to determine who is an effective MLB hitter is like using goal totals to determine who is an effective NHL defenseman.
His OPS+ was 99. He's a league average hitter.
He's a tiny smidge below average both last season and for his career, which is 'average' to any reasonable definition.

Varsho is not a concern. If he stays what he is, he is still a great asset. Hopefully his bat picks up a hair, I'm sure no fan will complain.
Get Vlad signed now!!! I feel any serious impact player with term wants an idea of how this team will look in a few years. You have what your entire rebuild was based on ready to walk into free agency... Vlad and Bo.
I'd put Soto chances at 15%... Likely we are used to bring the price up, but always a chance. Really think the chances increase substantially if you get Vlad here long term also.

Yeah Soto would be awesome but I'd rather have some clarity on Guerrero+Bichette's future with the team....hopefully both signed to long term deals with us

Terrible analogy on two fronts the Norris tends to go to the Defenceman who generates the most offence and OPS+ not a pure hitting metric.
OPS+ is not a good measurement to gauge the quality of a hitter, OPS+ is an offensive metric not a hitting metric per se. He is not a league average hitter, he is league average with a offence metric.
If you feel .214 is an average BA, would you take a lineup 1 through 9 who hit at a .214 pace?

Using batting average to evaluate hitters is nearly useless. There are better statistics. Use those.
Jesus Christ, no one is saying he has an average batting average. He has a poor batting average and makes up for it by doing other things well, making him an average hitter.

Not that i fully disagree with you but let's put aside the debate about whatever Varsho is an average hitter or not the question to your question will be no either way. A lineup made of 9 average hitters wont go far you need at least around 3 hitters who are significantly better than the average and ideally 1 or 2 you can be good contact hitter who get on base and can steal bases.
Personally i would call Varsho average. He's obviously not an average contact hitter in that regard he's clearly below average but he got some power which make him globally average as a hitter. He's a 7th, 8th or 9th batter in my book though. Too easy to strike out and not enough power to be in the middle of the lineup.
Strictly as a hitter Gurriel is better than him though.
It's more subjective than objective if you ask me. The current lineup will miss again.
Varsho will probably do better when he's not being bounced around the lineup because Schneider is desperately tying to move around the pile of trash he has to work with to get something going around Vlad/Bo. Not like massive improvement, but from average to like 103-105 OPS+. Keep in mind hitting in different spots does require a different approach. And they had Varsho from everywhere to lead off to bottom of the order.
99 OPS+ plus gold glove caliber defense is still incredibly valuable and i'm not sure why this is still being argued because of counting stats. He put up 5 WAR which is in all-star territory.

In the off chance Soto happens I would assume that includes Vladdy signing too too. Soto will want clarity on that if he came here. I assume Bo's going to test the market. Felt like that was always the case and with the down year I don't think he's signing at his low point a year out from FA. If Soto doesn't happen what happens with Vladdy is the big question. I feel like he wants too much tbh, but we'll see.

Ehh, I'm not sure if we can bank on any improvements from Varsho at the plate. He vastly outperformed basically all of his underlying stats last year and topped out as a league average hitter. The batted ball profile got worse than the previous year.
But even if he regresses somewhat, add a couple of good bats, and then having him permanently at the bottom of the lineup will be more than fine.

Detouring to Sasaki for a minute. He's limited to what he can sign for as an IFA below 25 years old, same thing when Ohtani first came over. What's stopping a team from signing him to his regular IFA signing bonus and then immediately giving him a contract extension of lets say 6 years, 20 million per year? The moment he signs he's just another minor leaguer until he's added to the MLB roster. Teams can give minor leaguers contract extensions before they play a single game. Giving away 3 pre arb years and 3 arb years for 120 million might not be smart once you have his rights but if it convinces him to sign with you in the first place is it against the rules?
