No Soto, What Now For the Jays? | JD Bunkis Podcast

SPORTSNET

December 9, 2024

Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith joins JD Bunkis to discuss the repercussions for the Blue Jays after Juan Soto's $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets, the pressure on the front office, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette's next deals, and if the Jays missed out on free agents.

Man...the more I think about it, the more worried I am in that the Jays will have extreme difficulty at this point re-signing Vladdy. I sure as heck hope I am proven wrong...

But, how does Vladdy not lick his chops now knowing he is less than a year away from having this time of courtship, especially after seeing what his good buddy just signed for. Either the Jays break the bank now for him at all costs so they don't risk losing him, and/or he is dead-set committed to being a Jay (which at this point I am unsure he is and would be), then we may just see our superstar and franchise player bolt for another team this time next year. :(

If Soto just got $765M when a year ago people probably thought he'd get like ~$450-500M, then what kind of $$ could Vlad get if he waits a year? People right now are saying ~$350-400M would be high, but if he goes to free agency at age ~26, maybe he gets ~$500-600M? Sounds bonkers, but look at what Soto just got - bonkers.

That's also just the $$. Jays don't really look like a short or long-term contender right now, which can impact whether guys want to stay.

He had a bad year after being a stud for most of the last 15 years. You make it sound like he turned into Buck Martinez at the dish.

I never said he was the answer. They need some thunder in the lineup. But nobody you want long term will sign until the pin heads sign Vlad. No idea why people have so much trouble wrapping their heads around this.

Goldschmidt is finished. Basically nobody in today's MLB can hit the velocity pitchers now bring once they hit age 35+ and lose the slightest bit on their reaction time.

Even guys who can still hit at 35 are unicorns. Most good hitters see huge regressions by age 32-33 (see Springer, see Arenado). We're in an era of very short careers due to the specialization/velocity of the pitching.

My guess at this point would be anywhere from $400 to $500 million. Unsure he'd get 15 years like Soto too...maybe 12 or 13 years max. I'm thinking anywhere from $32.5 million on the low end to north of $40 million is likely the range.

The recent articles by the Rogers cronies on SportsNet about signing Vladdy for 10 years at $300 million seem obsolete now.

Do you really just bitch and whine all day cause some other people haven't done what you want them to do?
You must be very new around these parts lol. Woodman is incredibly level headed and very much has supported the team in opposition of many others here. As we all know there isn’t much good with this team at the moment and no direction has been made aside from keeping a dead duck gm. This is a very grim looking team that it likely headed in a very bad direction. People should be understandably negative at this point

They are exactly where most thought they would be, strike out on the big star addition.

The sad thing is the bare minimum of getting Vlad extended is going to be their crowning accomplishment for the off season if they even get that done. Any combination of signings without Vlad extended is a complete failure, regardless if they get the next 2 or 3 top guys available.

Boston was able to get Devers at 315M, or whatever it was, are laughing now at the Jays and how they handled Vladdy. Could have gotten Vladdy at the same price if we didn't have dumb and dumber running the show. Even KC was able to get their guy, Bobby Witt Jr. to a nice long term deal. Shapiro and Atkins are morons.
I agree. Atkins and Shapiro have totally screwed this franchise trying to penny pinch Vlad. The price is significantly higher now with both the Soto deal setting a new high and just natural inflation. The way they handled this situation is a disgrace and they both should be fired. It’s time to move on from this management core. And it was true last year as well.

I am dying to see what is dumb and dumber's plan for the bullpen. They did not want to tender him for a reason, you'd think. Atkins claims they had no medical concerns with his elbow. So what's the reason not to bring him back? Let's see their grand plan with the money they saved on Romano.

Another bad look.. letting the Canadian homegrown kid go. Who is hated more? Blue Jays front office or Maple Leafs? Asking as a non Leafs fan who despises the direction of the Jays currently.

Awaiting that Alex Bregman contract and Corbin Burnes deal to follow through.

But don’t worry, this franchise will dig up old footage of 1992 and 1993 like clockwork. This shit show is getting tiresome.

I figure when Vladdy signs with a different team next year, the front office might finally get fired.

That's it. That's the only positive I can think of right now.

Insiders seem to believe that Corbin Burnes will be joining the Jays. Great addition to our rotation but doesn't do anything to our garbage offense and bullpen. I'm assuming if we do get Burnes, you're looking at

Burnes
Gausman
Berrios
Francis
Bassitt

Rodriguez moves to bullpen

Let's hope they don't saddle us with more middling players on long term deals before that. If they can't sign Vlad before season starts we really need to think about burning it to the ground and selling everyone to get a jump start on rebuild as the cupboards are bare. However hopefully ownership takes the keys away from these 2 and gives them to someone capable before that.

It's possible they move Bassitt and some of his salary out.

Can't wait for them to sign Burnes so they can brilliantly take him out of a playoff game after 47 pitches like Berrios.
Gotta make it to the playoffs first and we certainly don't have the offense or bullpen to do that.

No. I've been around here for a long time but only come in once in a while. I can't handle the negativity. Everything is just negative but I understand your point. Probably just caught me in a bad moment. Thanks for the heads up about the poster.
