Would have been awesome to see the Jays have pulled this off, as unlikely as it was. But like Ohtani, I'm not going to shit on management for this too much for not getting it done. The odds were slim, and as much as I say you try and sign a superstar at all costs, even this I find insane. They tried and made a seriously hefty offer (by all accounts), so you can't say more beyond that.
Yes, Soto is a 26-year old superstar with many years ahead. But at least there was a business case with Ohtani to offer that much -- getting a whole country's fans and the TV rights from there. The tickets sold by a whole entire fanbase gained. The money would have been made back in spades. Not sure the same will hold true with Soto.
That being said, what I will shit on management for, again, is leaving Vladdy unsigned...still. All this time. Years now. If anything, what this Soto pursuit did was escalate how much they'll have to give Vladdy now. Talk was 10 years, $300 million. He can now ask for a couple more years and at least $100 million more than that. Some team will offer that to him next year in free agency. He's not on Soto level, but he is also half a year younger and ready to hit his prime years. He's worth at least half of Soto.
Sometimes you have to feed your own before feeding others. Management may have just screwed themselves here. And needless to say, they have had a piss-poor track record these past few years.
