I may agree with you if we didn’t have the extra 10m in cap space once seguin is on LTIR . If he makes it back for playoffs we have an opportunity to be seriously stacked . We have a deep team plus cap space . This is the year .
I think the issue is who are you adding and what is the cost? Not sure a Nelson or Granlund will push them over the top. A massive trade will cost one of the young guys like stankoven or Bourque.

I do think the Seguin injury is something that should be capitalized upon. But this team needs a top 6 winger and a puck moving RHD to play with Lindell. Harley and heiskanen work well together as well as Bichsel and Lyubushkin form a good bottom pair. Nils and dumb dumb are not the answer.

Not sure how we don't have a chance this year..

This team has always preformed well in the playoffs and we have a solid team. Obviously some guys have started slow and the PP has been terrible, but our PK has been solid ( best in the NHL for December ) and our top guys are playing better.

If we add a top 4 Dman and a top 6 forward then I feel like we have just as good of a chance as any team. Only team that worries me is Florida, but anything can happen in the playoffs

I agree we shouldn’t do anything too crazy that involves our top prospects but the 2nds annd 3rds should be on the table . Our best bet may be to try and get a couple guys who won’t cost a ton . Maybe a guy like Reilly smith who ny might not want quite as much for . But we do have to make sure all the holes are filled . I’d love to get rid of dumba but that’s not gonna happen .

Florida's looked a lot more mortal this year, and their defense is considerably weaker.

Vegas is the scariest team to me. And you know they'll be adding at the deadline again.

A challenge is the Stars already traded this upcoming second rounder. And other than Bichsel, it doesn't really look like there's any young guy in the system with much trade value.

Adding meaningful help is probably going to require trading one of the two rookies. Otherwise, it's going to be bargain bin shopping for this year's Max Domi or Vlad Namestnikov -- an addition who isn't good enough to do anything more than be a future trivia answer of "oh yeah, I forgot he was a Star."

Barzal is still my ideal target (but probably too big for Nill to target during a season)

He's one of the very, very few guys potentially available that has gamebreaking abilities even if hes having a down year. We need a game-breaker, don't think we stand a chance until we get one even with the league overall looking weaker this season

I'd also accept Laine or Brady Tkachuk, but idk if they put us over the top. Not sure who else could potentially be available in that category but could be someone I'm missing

Travis Konecny could also be fun but not sure if hes available or even does the job for us. There's always Malkin I guess as a backup option too.

Well there seems to be one game changer available in Vancouver. Of course it goes back to cost. I know Nill said big game hunting. I’m sure stankoven would gladly go home and they would take him with open arms. Not sure what cap can go the other way to help offset.

I would love knoecny but he just signed a big deal. Barzal seems like a long shot but would really help this team with speed and offense. Islanders GM probably still thinks they can make the playoffs if he buys. I know Nill can sometimes be frustrating with his waiting but he is a significantly better GM compared to most teams.

I agree, he outbid all of the other gm’s and got a steal signing Dumba

I think Ottawa having a good season thanks to finally getting a real goalie takes Brady Tkachuk off the table, but I agree he'd be ideal.

I think stranges and maybe kyrou have a little value . Dont have to keep this years 1st or next years 2nd off the table . Something decent is doable without moving stankoven or bourque . It doesn’t have to be a huge move right now but someone to offset some of seguins offense would help us get home ice advantage and ideally push Blackwell to the press box come playoffs .

Hemming has had an underwhelming year in juniors at Barrie as well as 0 pts for Finland at WJC.

I wonder if his 1st round pick status would still be valid as an impact piece of a trade.

Hemming
1st in 25 or 26
Kyrou
Borque
2nd in 26

I see as our main trade pieces depending on the level of player(s) Dallas go after.

(Not all of above, just some of that list to base a package for a team after futures)

Anyone have any interest in Frank Vatrano? He can shoot and plays a heavy game. Would be nice for the playoffs.

There's a lot of things Dallas needs if they want to even make it out of the 1st round this year. Another undersized forward isn't one of them tho.

His offense would dry up big time here

He would be leading this team in hits by double the next guy. I don’t think he will disappear.

I agree that now is still a time to go for it, rather than overly plan for being a contender a few years from now. For one thing, we are having a bit of trouble scoring, but we will need to replace our big guns - Duchene, Seguin, Benn, maybe even Marchment. Rope may fit the typical FW pattern and start his goal scoring decline in a few years.

No, this is the year to go for it. If they sort of fail a third time, maybe there will be a bit more than rebuilding "on the fly."

Hasn't played a game this season. Have to assume he's coming off an injury. Also been bad the last couple of years

I wonder if Pageau and Lee would be targets, using Seguin's cap space on LTIR to make it work.

Outsiders perspective but Lee would help the net front presence since Pavelski left.

Don't think either of those guys make us a contender/put us over the edge to be honest
