I agree with this - they're not staying out as high on the points, instead falling back to clog up the middle and support teammates down low, which has the beneficial effect of not getting skated in circles repeatedly. It seems like a modified man and I do think they've been more effective at running it. So credit to the coaching staff for that.

But their breakouts have still been very inconsistent. I hate the Carlyle-esque conga line up the boards where one guy tries to shove the puck through forecheckers to the next guy, who tries to chip it out past the point man. One of the things that impressed me most about Leo last year was his ability to find open players when he jumped on a puck in the d-zone and start a breakout. He hasn't been nearly as good at that this year. It might be small sample size, it might be just a comfort level thing with a new linemate, but I really hope it's not being coached out of him. The Ducks need a transition game to be good. Theirs has been bad since Boudreau. I'm kind of over it.
Yeah the breakouts are rough. We end up just relying on the individual skill of our puck transporters but that doesn’t lend itself to an organized break in. It just leaves Terry or Zegras with no options.

Yeah, the unga-bunga outdated way of entering offensive zone has been very hard to watch (I feel the team have improved in other areas tho).

Honestly it’s hard to even defend Cronin anymore. Ducks are the most poorly coached team in the league.

How does PV watch this and think, “we’re making progress”
You think it’s just completely system based we are badly being outplayed tonight? I don’t care for Cronin much but the players have to play.

I don’t disagree but it seems like the players have no idea where to be or how they are supposed to play. And to me, that is on coaching. I have not seen anything that tells me he is a good coach.

They are NHL players. Hockey systems can only change so much. I’m not saying he’s a good coach but there needs to be more push.

Again don’t disagree but if the coach is not clear on his instructions or the player is unsure of the system, the player will play slower and more tentative as he tries to be where he is supposed to be. I feel the Ducks don’t know exactly how they are supposed to play so they are half a step slow to everything. And based on Cronins interviews, it does not seem like he has any answers.

We have an inexperienced but talented team. Yes the avs are better but they shouldn't be twice as many shots better

No but that will happen at times with inexperienced teams.

If it happened for the 4th time this season last night I wouldn’t be as optimistic.

That was a desperate Avs team at home, I give props for getting a point out of there whatever the fashion.

Agreed
Last season we get shelled facing a team like that. They would’ve pumped Gibson for 8. This year we played by far our worst game against a team supposed to be a contender who like you said was super desperate at home. Dosty plays amazing and we end up with just enough fight in us to tie it up and get the point. Close to winning in OT as well.

Also keep in mind we are coming off an emotional home opener win in OT. You almost always have let downs after those types of wins. The entire recipe was there to get destroyed and we got a point.

Cronin gets the year no matter what and I don’t really have a problem with it.

I just hope Verbeek is keeping tabs on potential replacements throughout the year

0%. Firing the coach mid season is something you do in a desperate attempt to try to salvage it. There’s no internal expectation that this team is a playoff team this season
You don't think there's a chance that if Verbeek isn't seeing the player development he's hoping for, he could make the change?

I also wonder if there might be more expectation for this team than we think. Not to make the playoffs, but to make a positive move out of the basement. If Cronin has us at the bottom of the standings halfway through the season, I wonder if they would want to turn that around instead of losing another half season of positive player development. Just a thought.

With a team this young, I don’t see the exuberance that I would expect, especially on the bench. They just don’t look like they have any enjoyment.

There is a fine line between accountability and encouragement.

I also think accountability goes both ways. Players want to be successful and if they have no confidence in the coach, it is tough to execute on the ice.

All professional sports have changed since the time when players were captives of the teams that owned them, so to speak. When they are doing something they think is stupid it is tough to blindly follow it.

No different than a job and a boss. There was a time when a stupid manager would tell employees to do something and they would just do it. People are now more inclined to consider how constantly doing something stupid will affect them and their career. If a better opportunity opens up, they’re gone. At the very least they have already tuned out the boss.

John

Edit Added: The Ducks are 2-1-1 after 4 games, which is a good start. But they sure don’t act like it.

Is this the team that has twice scored very late to tie games, winning one of those in OT? I guess I haven’t paid enough attention to body language.

I I haven’t been to any of the games and maybe haven’t seen enough of the bench, but it seems there is a lot less chatting and demonstrative; especially Carlsson and Zegras.

In the past both seemed more non-stop. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems that aspect is gone.

Not to be rude but you are wrong. Every clip guys are either chatting to each other, chatting to a coach, or looking at something on an iPad - this last point is maybe why you think there is less chatter, considering it wasn't really a thing like 4-5 years ago.

Hell, Leo scoring the OT winner against Utah was the happiest I've seen them after a win in like 3 years.

I haven’t really paid much attention to bench chatter. Have been mostly pleased with the on ice play, special teams excepted.

Re: Cronin getting fired...

As long as he makes at least some adjustments from his internal approach to last season, I'd estimate his chances of being fired before the season somewhere between 1-2%.

IMO the probability increases to like 25% only if all of the crazier things about him are true/not misunderstandings and he is creating some kind of negative environment.

That’s fine.

I know I’m tainted because I have watched AZ, now Utah, and the Ducks are the least fun to watch.

Yeah, I’m happy we got a point against Colorado. Terry’s last second goal was great. But we won only because of Dostal. I’m not going to pretend our D is better because we only have up 3 goals that should have been 6 or more.

I was pretty excited going into this season. I expected mistakes, losses, excitement, but not ineptness. Most of last night’s game was unwatchable.
