Depends on how ruthless the Avs want to be.

According to Capwages, Colton has a full NTC. He'd easily be claimed by a lottery team, so if CMac wanted to he simply presents the options of playing for a lottery team when he's waived or to accept a trade to one of the teams that are interested in him.
Just because the New York Rangers can do it, doesn't mean that a whole lot of other teams around the league could or should. If we go on a deep run this year, then maybe you can get away with it, but let's face it: Colorado is not a top destination in the league if the team is not a contender. There are like 4-5 teams that can treat their players like shit, and not have an effect on their attractivity: Florida teams, New York, Vegas and... that's about it. Toronto maybe.

Either he's good and he's gone (too expensive) or he's bad and it was a bad trade. Exact same situation as Kuemper.

That doesn't mean we can't appreciate if he has a good season here...it's just not ideal.
I think the Avs will assess how well he fits in over the course of a few months and will likely extend him around February, if all goes well.

I don't see them dragging this out until after the playoffs and I don't see the Blackwood side wanting to test free agency for a better situation (because he could also find more money + better term but end up on another losing team) but the Avs will have to give him a minimum of 4 years term, in my opinion.

If Blackwood plays well for us, I think it would take somewhere in between 4-4.5 to re-sign him maybe like a 3 or 4 year term or longer?
I think that will be the price tag $4.5M to $5M per...same kind of deal as D'Accord and UPL.

Manson would return a 1st+, he's far from being a negative asset. The thing is we have no one to replace him.

Colton I don't really care. We needed him to play center and he isn't really good at center. The real issue is he has a full NMC now.
I agree, either way they should find a way to move him--while even I think they need some beef in the defensive corps come playoff time, I really don't think it'd be that hard to find someone suited for that role.

This off season, not in season. You have to admit he completely changes in the playoffs, more physical and more focused on being responsible.

Honestly I'd rather he dial it back, and ensure he's healthy at that time. I think he knows that, he's also been seen working on power skating.

If we trade Manson and then get some other beef, then nearly everyone will complain about the new beef and how we could have gotten better beef if CMac hadn't waited so long etc etc.

I'm kind of excited about the Keaton Middleton era. He could be the next Chris McAllister.

I don't think that was ever on the table TBH. Not like he had that much more value then. Yeah, he had a decent playoffs (atleast IMO, not going to argue here about it), but it was a very similar rollercoaster last year. And like I said, Georgiev looked passable after that first game in WPG. They were still going to give him one last chance, and I don't think you can blame them that much.

What should've happened, is trading Annunen and getting a proper backup. Clearly Bednar had no trust in him, and CMac grabbed like 3 goalies in the draft. Something could've been done, something should've been done.

It’s not just player value. It’s also roster flexibility.

I don't recall him being great the last two postseasons, the underlying numbers reflect that (he was a disaster in 2023), but yes, in 2022 he was an absolute beast. So...who knows.

Yes, there will likely be beef about the new beef as opposed to the old beef.

One thing I will say for sure about Manson, for a big guy he moves incredibly well. Middleton obviously moves about as well as a guy that big is expected to move, but if he's finally ready for a depth role I'm all for it.

I’m not sure who plays on the right or left side, but Oleksiak would be a good option if they were to trade Manson, especially with retention.

He's nothing special, but he can shift the momentum of a game with a hit, and he's feared.

At least he makes 4M, unlike a Jacob Trouba.

I don't really agree with running a nothing enforcer like you, but I do see value in Manson.

He'll have value, God, look at what EJ is making this year lol.

Actually all beef joking aside (get it? a side. of beef) I am happy to see Middleton getting some minutes because sometimes we can use a big thing that hits on the back end, and CLEARS OUT THE CREASE when someone is f***ing around a little after the whistle. He did that more in the first game I saw him this year than the whole team did last month. It's just nice to have the behemoth option, hopefully he can fill that role. He had a few nice outlet passes and he seems to be capable of just clearing the zone rather than fancy-f***ing around like most of our team likes to do in our zone. I'm hoping Givani brings some hitting too. I've hardly seem him play, but I remember him being physical.

It's Tuesday, which means Steve Valiquette on the Real Kyper and Bourne Show at 5 PM EST.

They talked about the trade.

Valy on Georgiev: "He's going to rebound a bit in San Jose. A guy that needs high volume shot counts which the Avs don't allow, he'll get lots of rubber with the Sharks who are dead last in shots and scoring chances against. Lost the room in Colorado. Nobody really trusted him, even when he won 6 or 7 in a row for them. Lack of communication between player and his peers as well as coaches. It was a bad, bad situation."

Valy on Blackwood: "One of my favourite goaltenders in the league today. I believe he's top 10 in pure skill. Stops everything he needs to stop, top 3 in the league in save percentage for low and medium danger scoring chances against. Real big student of the game, constantly evaluating ways to improve and correct any weaknesses. Avs need to do a better job of not allowing high danger scoring chances in the first 10 minutes of the game, regardless of any goalie they got. Guys love playing for him and he'll fit in seamlessly with the Avs."

Valy on Wedgewood: "Avs are a team that are heavy into the analytics, sometimes a bit too much. Wedgewood is a battler who has great analytics against high danger chances, which while the Avs don't allow shots in volume, do allow those high quality or high dancer scoring chances. They looked into that metric for him thoroughly before acquiring him. One of the best dressing room guys you could have. Actually didn't start off great with his relationship with Blackwood in New Jersey, Wedgewood felt he was going to get a chance to be the starter before Blackwood was given the reigns. They worked through initial difficulties in their relationship and Wedgewood did a 180 to become a super supportive teammate. He wants to win, whether it's him between the pipes or the starter."

After Valy dropped off, Kypreos was asked a bit more about the Avs by Bourne/McKee.

Kyper: "That team has to be absolutely JUICED right now. They're going to steamroll Pittsburgh tonight and get a huge boost from these moves. You can't imagine how much bad goaltending weighs on you as a player, you start second guessing yourself and everything you do because any mistake ends up in the back of your net. They just saw their management take out the trash and give them two new goaltenders who can stop a puck. They've got to feel over the moon right now, I expect a big push from them."

Kyper was asked if the Avs are done: "You'd think so, but not what I'm hearing. They want a defenseman and, just like the two goalies, they won't wait until the deadline to make a move. They're willing to overpay a bit to get who they want and when they want, this team isn't waiting to see how things shake out by the deadline. They want to plug their holes and get on a heater right now, not in February or March."

Thanks for sharing that.

Valiquette did his homework before this interview.

CEO of Clear Sight Analytics and seems to regularly consult with teams.

He was talking today about an engagement he had during the summer where a team wanted him to present on the best/worst goaltenders facing deflections/screens. He said Montembeault is at the top of the list and has continued like that this year.

He's big into the numbers and analysis of all things goaltending related. East/West efficiency, reverse VH, etc. etc.

The comments about targeting a defenseman make me happy.

Wonder if that means a top 4 shakeup trade involving Girard perhaps, or more of a 4/5 tweener that can play on the second or third pair? The overpay comment kinda sounds like the latter.

Girard has played far too well this season to be moved. He even wins a ton more board and corner battles. He has clearly gotten stronger.
