I have to think now that he's (at least temporarily) sorted out the goaltending situation, CMac's next project is exploring all the possible trade options with Rantanen. If they can't find the right trade they'll probably have to re-sign him but that likely means losing some serious depth down the road.

I have the same feeling :highclap:
I hope so . Can’t imagine how deflating it must be to have such poor goaltending . Maybe the defense will play better too .

Jenner would be cool, but isn’t he gone for months /rest of season ?

This won’t be popular (or likely realistic …)but if Nashville continues to struggle , maybe see if O’Reilly could ….. *duck for cover..*

There's a French article about Girard here on the NHL website, you can translate it if you're interested.

Basically he says he's playing his best hockey and his head is at the right place, that he's been in the league for 8 years but it feels like 2 or 3.

He's at home in Colorado and he likes the org and the team.

Also Bednar says G has never been this good in his own zone.

That's why we don't love this deal.
I’m not sure I get this logic. There were no good goalies available on value contracts so we were always gonna have to pay up after the season if we wanted to resolve the goalie issue.

If Blackwood plays well enough to earn a solid raise he’s likely earned it so how is that a reason to not love the trade?

Yeah Sammy's been hard carrying his pairing with Manson this season. It seems like he's lost some of his offensive pop, but he's quietly on pace for 45pts this year and has been noticeably better defensively than he ever has imo.

Either he's good and he's gone (too expensive) or he's bad and it was a bad trade. Exact same situation as Kuemper.

That doesn't mean we can't appreciate if he has a good season here...it's just not ideal.

I get that to a degree, but what other options fit the ideal criteria? Gibson if they can find multiple retentions I suppose? But that would have cost more so it’s a hard rabbit hole to compare.

Also, I’m not sure they don’t find a way to sign him if he’s deserving. We’re in a different time than the grouby scenario. We’re on the back-9 of our contention window and I think they do anything they can to prolong it. That’s why we saw this trade now and not closer to deadline imo.

I would love them to invest in a goalie but Rantanen has other plans.

Absolutely true. I've thought it's been Sammy's best year so far. He'll produce a timely offensive pop, but the way the small strong guy defends with his timing and stick had been no-fear awesome. I actually think Sammy's been our second best D so far this year.

Ultimately, what were the realistic options for goalies?

Mrazek
Vejmelka
Gibson
Blackwood

I think in terms of play, it’s a complete toss up between all 4. There’s not a single one there that you can guarantee will play the best.

I think Gibson and Blackwood were the best options, but with far differing contact situations. They both had good and bad. Gibson would’ve been good because he has 2 extra years and you potentially take care of the problem? But what if he sucks? Then you have a problem for 2 extra years

Blackwood the opposite. He’s UFA. If he’s bad, then you clean your hands. If he’s good, you have to pay him.

There were risks no matter what. Just different risks.

CMac with the Catch 22 situation. Glad he took a shit and got off the pot. Just hope we have a solution that doesn't hurt going into next year.

We paid too much for couple months of goaltending. Solving the issue for the long-term is what we should be after.

We were thin on assets before this trade..

I don't feel it was that much , we had to get rid of George, late 2nd round picks aren't much they rarely turn out and Koval enko can't really play here when we are healthy , plus we have Ivan Ivan and Prischepov who I like better and play more of a prostyle NHL game, especially playoff style.

No place for.Kovalenlo really, also we probably add someone at the deadline.

If Blackwood plays well for us, I think it would take somewhere in between 4-4.5 to re-sign him maybe like a 3 or 4 year term or longer?
