We paid too much for couple months of goaltending. Solving the issue for the long-term is what we should be after.

We were thin on assets before this trade..
So what was a suitable solution in your eyes?
So you rather waste the whole season with doing nothing and Georgie would have been gone anyway since his contract would end. There are plenty of Kovalenkos out there to be claimed.

This right here. As well, as already posted, Cmac has said he has intentions of extending.

Ok. Now get a great 3C and a solid LD by the deadline and we're cooking. Gourde, Nelson, I don't know.

Drouin - MacK - Rants
Lehky - Mitts - Nuke
Colton - Gourde - LOC
Wood - Ivan - Kelly/Kivi

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Ferraro - Malinski
CDH

BetterWood
GoodWood

I like it. Ferraro is just an example. That should be competing for a cup, but we know we ain't getting a healthy Avs team that much we know.

Same, but Evans instead of Gourde and Pettersson instead of Ferraro.

It would've cost a TON more to get a more long-term solution and those possible solutions would've carried as many if not more red flags.

I think Mike Johnson at NHL Network nailed it on the head. The trade was essentially Kovalenko for Blackwood, the draft picks were simply the cost required to dump a bad goaltender's salary. I don't think that's an overpay given the circumstances, whether it all pans out remains to be seen.

What's the long-term solution? Gibson is just as risky.

Unless we want to pay $8 mil for a goalie like Ottawa did with Ullmark, we're stuck with short-term options and hope we get lucky.

There's a French article about Girard here on the NHL website, you can translate it if you're interested.

Basically he says he's playing his best hockey and his head is at the right place, that he's been in the league for 8 years but it feels like 2 or 3.

He's at home in Colorado and he likes the org and the team.

Also Bednar says G has never been this good in his own zone.

But he was bad against Vegas in the playoffs !!

If Blackwood plays extremely adequate, see if he accepts 3x4.
In relation to the cap, that's less than what we gave to the NYR backup Alexandar Georgiev 3 years ago, who was RFA.

If he's proving that he can be a #1 goalie for the rest of the season Blackwood is looking at ~5M X 4 or 5M X 5, which is bit less than what Kuemper and Grubauer got because he has a shorter track record.

However, I could see him getting even more than that if he's playing extremely well and we make a deep playoff run. He literally just turned 28 too, so that's the perfect age for a goalie.

CMac basically said they plan to re-sign Blackwood.

That’s great to see, although, it shouldn’t come at all as a surprise. The avs have shown on multiple occasions that they like to keep players when they spend good assets to acquire. Kuemper feels like the only anomaly from the past.

Secondly, so long as Blackwood is reasonable in his demands, the Avs are going to try to extend him. The UFA options are already poor, and will likely get worse as some teams will extend their players. Also, the Avs have never really shown a requirement of needing to see a goalie play before extending.
They acquired Grubauer and signed him 1 day later.
They acquired Georgiev and signed him 3 days later.
Again, Kuemper being the only exception. I’d take a guess that Kuemper probably didn’t want to extend right away, or, the amount he wanted was outside what the Avs wanted to pay for goaltending.

Colton and Manson are in danger
If they can find a way to dump Manson that doesn't cost any assets they should do that tomorrow and look for other ways to add size to the blueline (shouldn't be that hard). If anyone's not living up to his deal, it's him.

As for Colton, I hope they can keep him now (surprised I'm typing that) but at the very least him proving he can score reliably should make him more moveable now.

Manson would return a 1st+, he's far from being a negative asset. The thing is we have no one to replace him.

Colton I don't really care. We needed him to play center and he isn't really good at center. The real issue is he has a full NMC now.

I was just basing it on his previous contracts. It'll obviously be something to keep an eye on.

Get that 1st and turn around and use it on chatfield+

CMac was late. That's the biggest issue. He should have traded George in summer.

Everyone agrees that would have been ideal. But the very worst would have been waiting for the TDL. The summer scenario is water under the bridge. This is somewhere in between best case and worst case. It’s the best we can have this week, so we live with it.

Yeah, but hopefully he does well for us and we sign him for little bellow 5. Can we even afford 5? I’m thinking the most we can give a goalie is 4
It would be nice to have a goalie with decent size until one of our drafted goalies is ready. If he fits here and plays like a lefit #1, I am ok with 5 a year because of the cap going up. Making it happen is the hard part of course, but maybe the cap will go up nicely and some Landy clarity will happen.

I don't think that was ever on the table TBH. Not like he had that much more value then. Yeah, he had a decent playoffs (atleast IMO, not going to argue here about it), but it was a very similar rollercoaster last year. And like I said, Georgiev looked passable after that first game in WPG. They were still going to give him one last chance, and I don't think you can blame them that much.

What should've happened, is trading Annunen and getting a proper backup. Clearly Bednar had no trust in him, and CMac grabbed like 3 goalies in the draft. Something could've been done, something should've been done.

Depends on how ruthless the Avs want to be.

According to Capwages, Colton has a full NTC. He'd easily be claimed by a lottery team, so if CMac wanted to he simply presents the options of playing for a lottery team when he's waived or to accept a trade to one of the teams that are interested in him.
